Salary : $22 - $28 per hour
OVERALL
This is a mid-level position for those interested in continuing a career in the brewing industry and working in a fast-paced, production focused brewery. This hybrid position requires a high attention to detail, and ability to operate multiple cellar & brewhouse practices with limited supervision. This is a full-time, hourly position that has potential to grow into other opportunities within the brewery. The position works out of our Dayton Street production facility and will report to the Director of Brewery Operations.
ESSENTIAL TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assistant Brewer (1-2 days / week) :
All aspects of wort production including (but not limited to) mashing, lautering, run-off, grain-out, boiling, whirlpooling, and knock out
Maintaining sanitary working conditions and equipment at all timesScheduled or unscheduled required maintenance of all brewhouse equipment (mill, chain / disk, boiler, BH pumps, RO system, all related tubing and hoses)CIP of brewhouse and all related equipmentAssist with accurately harvesting yeast and performing pitch calculations.Operating mill and chain / disk; retrieving and organizing malt in a timely fashion.Recording all applicable gravities, pH, temperatures, and other requested parameters.Pitching yeast, enzymes, zinc, and hops.Filling HLT and CLT at required times, balancing water usage with cellar staff and regulating when necessary.Inspecting and verifying cellar operations to related tanks. (E.g. Ensuring FVs have been cleaned and sanitized to protocol before knock out).Consistently communicating status of daily brews with other brewers, intervening when directed.Maintain required spreadsheets.Cellar Tech (3-4 days / week )Perform cleaning, sanitation, and CO2 purging on fermentation vessels and brite tanks.
Complete dry hopping, fruiting, and other dosing on beer throughout various stages of the cellaring.Transfer, fine, and centrifuge product.Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of all brewery equipment & parts, including cellar floors, drains, and tank exteriors.Monitor the quality of the product : temperature, gravity, pH, VDK levels, and carbonation on all fermentation vessels and BBTs. Alerts the head brewer and QA / QC manager of any issues or concerns.Follow all SOPs and guidelines for cleaning, maintaining, and storing brewery cooperage.Assist with packaging operations : keg filling, canning, bottling, and packaging equipment cleaning procedures.Assist with accurately harvesting yeast and performing pitch calculations.Communicates regularly, efficiently, and effectively with all supervisors and team members.Take guidance from Lead and Senior Cellar members on job duties for the day and other related duties as assigned.Learn SOPs for higher level cellar operations from senior cellar staff members.Identifies and communicates problems with equipment, malfunctions, or breakdown in process.Assists in maintaining PAR levels on commonly used products by identifying and communicating inventory levels to Cellar Manager.Completes all necessary and assigned paperwork accurately and on time.Arrives to each shift on time with a positive attitude.SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Alvarado Street Brewery was founded by father-son duo John and J.C. Hill in March of 2014. What started as a neighborhood brewery restaurant in Downtown Monterey has evolved into four locations dedicated to serving Monterey countys locals and visitors alike. Our production brewery & tasting room opened in the Spreckels Junction area of Salinas in 2016. In early 2018 we opened our R&D pilot brewery and bistro in Carmel-by-the-Sea, known as the Stro. Most recently in November of 2022, we opened Alvarado on Main, an art deco styled restaurant and bar in the center of Oldtown Salinas.
