- High School Diploma or GED;
- Valid Texas Drivers’ License;
- Advanced or higher Peace Officer Proficiency Certification issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE);
- Meet and maintain all TCOLE standards.
- Comprehensive knowledge of police procedures, criminal investigation, police report writing, criminal law, code of criminal procedures, chapter 52 of Texas Family Code, chapter 37 of Texas Education Code, District & Campus emergency operation plans, national incident management system (NIMS) and other applicable laws and practices relating to school-based law enforcement;
- Superior interpersonal skills, including ability to interact with people of diverse backgrounds in a professional and proficient manner;
- Ability to coordinate the work efforts and schedules of district police officers, provide direct instruction and supervision as necessary;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, staff, and the public;
- Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of laws, criminal procedures, organizational general orders, policies and activities;
- Ability to communicate effectively orally, by phone, in person, and in writing;
- Ability to represent the department and District in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner;
- Ability to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner;
- Ability to use Department and District equipment effectively;
- Ability to complete Supervisor training within 12 months of appointment;
- Ability to attend and graduate from the Leadership Command College within 36 months of appointment, as available.
- Minimum of one (1) year of service with Alvin ISD Police Department.

A Police Sergeant serves as a first line supervisor for the purpose of directing the daily activities of police officers, parking lot attendants and crossing guards, ensuring the accomplishment of accountability and performance objectives; maintaining policy, procedural and legal compliance; reinforcing core values; promoting the District’s and Department’s strategic goals and objectives; following directives as prescribed; and completing tasks as assigned. Basic duties shall include all those of a peace officer and those indicated in accordance with 37.081 of the Texas Education Code to enforce all laws, including municipal ordinances, county ordinances, and state laws to protect all students, faculty, staff, and others from physical harm and to prevent the loss of property due to theft and/or vandalism.
The performance of sergeants can either enhance or weaken the community’s perception of the Department’s professionalism, effectiveness and trust. The sergeant’s direct contact with police officers transcends to a great amount of influence and, thusly, their leadership role is critical for the stability and future of the Department.
