Position Overview:
Alzheimer s Los Angeles seeks a highly skilled and detail-oriented SQL Server Database Engineer/Administrator to join our team.
Our mission is to improve the lives of families affected by Alzheimer s and other dementias by increasing awareness; delivering effective programs and services; providing compassionate support; and advocating for quality care and a cure. For 44 years we have focused on meeting the needs of diverse caregiving families and improving healthcare for people living with dementia.
The primary responsibility of this role is to design, manage, and maintain SQL Server databases, with a key focus on writing complex queries and creating insightful reports. The ideal candidate will have expertise in query optimization, database performance, report generation and leadership skills to upgrade data driven decision-making capability across the organization. The databases to be managed include our electronic health record system (Penelope/Bonterra), donor management database (DonorPerfect), event management and peer-to-peer fundraising database (Classy).
The position will report to the Chief Operating Officer and take strategic direction from the Chief Executive Officer.
This is a fully remote position.
Responsibilities
Report Creation & Management:
- Design and develop custom reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or other reporting tools.
- Create automated report schedules and ensure accurate, timely delivery of reports.
- Work with users to understand reporting requirements and ensure that reports meet business needs.
Database Management & Optimization:
- Manage, maintain, and troubleshoot SQL Server databases to ensure high performance, security, and availability.
- Perform routine database maintenance tasks such as backups, indexing, and optimization.
- Monitor and tune database performance, ensuring fast query execution and minimal downtime.
Query Writing & Optimization:
- Write and optimize complex SQL queries to extract, manipulate, and analyze data.
- Collaborate with users, and stakeholders, to create efficient queries tailored to business needs.
- Implement best practices for SQL query writing, including efficient joins, indexing, and query optimization techniques.
Database Security & Integrity:
- Implement and enforce database security policies and procedures.
- Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Collaboration & Documentation:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and provide data solutions.
- Document SQL queries, stored procedures, database schema, and report designs for future reference.
Troubleshooting & Issue Resolution:
- Support users and developers by resolving data-related technical issues and troubleshooting queries by guiding them with best practices.
- Provide on-call support for critical database issues when necessary.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical teams.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on data accuracy and consistency.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Technical Skills:
- Proficient in SQL Server (2016 or later), T-SQL, and database management practices.
- Familiarity with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or similar tools for creating and managing reports.
- Strong understanding of indexing, joins, stored procedures, triggers, and database normalization.
- Experience with database security, backups, and disaster recovery plans.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with Power BI or other data visualization tools.
- Familiarity with cloud-based database solutions (e.g., Azure SQL, AWS RDS).
- Knowledge of data warehousing and ETL processes.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated success in assisting users to implement best practices in data management
- 3 years of experience in SQL Server database administration, engineering, or related roles.
- Strong experience in writing and optimizing complex SQL queries.
- Proven experience in designing and developing reports using SSRS, Power BI, or similar reporting tools.
- Experience with database performance tuning and query optimization.
