Position Overview
We are seeking an Underwriting Analyst to support our underwriting team with data quality management standardized reporting and portfolio monitoring. The ideal candidate will have experience working with policy and claims level data in detailed bordereaux formats and familiarity with financial metrics specific to insurance/reinsurance. This role is well-suited for a detail-oriented individual who enjoys working with large datasets, ensuring data accuracy, and optimizing reporting processes. The role requires a structured approach to problem-solving, the ability to interpret complex datasets that impact underwriting decisions, and strong communication skills to liaise with internal departments and external partners.
This position reports to the SVP, Program Management and is fully in-person (Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM).
Key Responsibilities
- Process, clean, and validate policy and claim level data to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain and enhance data integrity and reporting processes to ensure accuracy in portfolio reviews and financial metrics. Assist in preparing underwriting reports that analyze premium and claims trends, at the portfolio level, but also individual policy level.
- Reconcile financial and settlement data, identifying discrepancies and reporting issues.
- Utilize Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, Macros), Power BI, and proprietary software to streamline reporting and develop actionable insights for underwriting decisions.
- Monitor bound insurance risks, escalate anomalies, and ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines.
- Create and maintain monthly and quarterly management reports on underwriting performance.
- Communicate with external business partners regarding corrections or enhancements to underlying policy and claim reports..
- Assist with additional tasks and strategic projects as dictated by business needs.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, Data Analytics, or a related field.
- Experience: 2-4 years in an insurance or reinsurance, role, specific to finance, underwriting, reporting, or claims.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong Excel skills (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, data cleaning, formulas).
- Experience with insurance data management, premium and claims settlements, or policy administration systems.
- Familiarity with Power BI or other reporting/analytics tools.
- Ability to learn and navigate proprietary insurance software.
- Soft Skills:
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, as an independent contributor as well as within a team or working group.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for internal and external interactions.
- Additional: Ability to travel domestically for industry conferences and training sessions as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with data analytics specific to insurance carrier or reinsurer profit and loss metrics.
- Familiarity with GAAP accounting principles and financial reporting for insurance.
- Experience working with underwriting, claims, or finance, or actuarial teams.
