Amalgamated Sugar Company is seeking a skilled machinist to join our team. This role involves setting up and operating manually controlled machines with precision. The machinist will be responsible for fabricating, maintaining, repairing, and altering machinery and parts. Additionally, the role includes creating precision parts, tools, and equipment based on blueprints, ensuring timely and productive completion of tasks with minimal supervision. This position reports to the Mechanical Supervisor.

Ability to perform basic mathematical problems and equations. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect supporting data, establish the facts and draw a reasonable conclusion. (Troubleshooting skills)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to move and transfer products with an overhead crane. Ability to lift 100 lbs. when required. While performing duties on the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and reach with arms and hands. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIROMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those and employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Must be willing to work a rotating schedule 12 hour nights and days when needed. Must be willing to come in on days off when the facility requires it. The noise levels in the work environment is usually moderate to high. This is a fast-paced environment with several other employees in and out. Safety is first and foremost the main priority. All PPE associated with the job and task will be required all the time.

Crescent wrenches 10”, 12”, (and 15” if possible), Assorted sizes of screwdrivers in both Philips and straight, Torpedo level, Assorted chisels and punches, Combination end wrenches 3/8” thru 1 ¼”, Ball peen hammer, Channel lock pliers 12”, Pipe wrenches 12” and 14”, Tape measure 15’, Tri square, Pliers, ½” drive ratchet and socket set 3/8” thru 1 ¼”, Assorted pry bars
Basic set of good quality precision machining tools required but not limited to.
0-6” micrometers, 0-12” inside micrometers, 4” and 12” dial calipers, 5/16” to 6” snap gauges, Shaft center finder, lay out squares, 4” and 6” machinist levels, thread gauges both metric and standard, dial indicator with magnetic base, machinist hammers (ball peen, brass, lead soft hammers), center punches.

Additional Responsibilities
- Perform all tasks in a safe and responsible manner.
- Read and interprets blueprints and can build professional, precision, quality parts every time.
- Uses precision gauges and measuring instruments to meet tolerance requirements.
- Uses precision tools, machinery and equipment such as a lathe, vertical milling machine, drill press, hydraulic press, chop saw, band saw, push and pull broaches and a variety of cutting tools and equipment.
- Fabricate and shape parts such as pump shaft and parts out of metal, plastics and composites.
- Properly and safely aligns, secures and removes holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
- Recognizes, deploys and properly uses inserts, fixtures and tooling for the task at hand.
- Performs daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance task on machinery and equipment in the shop.
- Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend changes and modifications for efficiency and adaptability to setups and production.
- Ability to track jobs and parts to keep jobs moving forward.
- Complies with all safety policies and complies with all specifications, regulations and instructions.
- Must be able to do math problems associated with machining to produce accurate precision parts every time.
- Basic metallurgy and welding skills.
- Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Must have general knowledge of 1) Estimating time and materials for machine jobs.
- Must have general knowledge of metals and the quality and machinability and uses of metals, alloys and other materials.
- Must have general knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Must have general knowledge of design techniques, tools and principals involved in the production of precision technical plans and drawings.
- 5 years of related experience
- High school diploma or GED
