Our goal is to provide Amani Scholars with the academic and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in competitive high school programs, college and the career of their choice. Amani Public Charter School is located in Mount Vernon, NY which is 25 minutes from Midtown Manhattan. The school is walking distance from the Metro North train station and a short distance from the MTA 241st station. Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to students in a classroom by delivering specialized instruction and ensuring learning through a variety of co-teaching models and strategies. (Be present during ELA and Math classes daily. Push into 8th grade classroom weekly for Consult Teacher CT services as indicated in the IEP.)
  • Provide small group skill instruction through a daily resource room pull-out program. (45 minutes of Resource Room daily.)
  • Ensure appropriate accommodations to the curriculum, lessons and learning environment. (Provide supplemental aids to learning as outlined in the IEP to support students in the general education class, ex: graphic organizers or multiplication charts.)
  • Co-design classroom activities and differentiated lessons so that all students meet their IEP goals, and can access the curriculum. (Co-planning with ELA and Math teachers.)
  • Formally and informally assess student learning, analyze this data to create a comprehensive learning program and track progress toward IEP goals. (IEP trackers in the binders with the frequency that is required by the IEP.)
  • Work collaboratively with Co-Teacher, grade-level teams and the instructional support team, to plan, share student work and ensure that instruction is aligned with identified curriculum and standards. (Read lesson plans for Science and Social Studies to support students even though you do not push into these classes.)
  • Implement a variety of behavior management techniques that increase positive student engagement. (Use tools from your toolbox as well as strategies outlined in the IEP.)
  • Create comprehensive IEP documents by analyzing student evaluations, identifying areas of strengths and weaknesses that align with annual measurable goals. (Complete IEP "at a glance" documents for teachers. Complete IEP drafts in preparation for CSE meetings. Complete IEP Progress Reports quarterly.)
  • Build a partnership with families, encouraging their active participation in students' learning. (Communicate weekly with parents both positive and negative. Communication should be logged and in the IEP binders. Emails, text messages, face to face conversations or phone calls, everything should be logged.)
  • Ensure that all Testing Accommodations are met as outlined in the IEP.
  • Communicate any and all questions or concerns to the Coordinator of Special Education.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's Degree Preferred
  • New York State Teaching Certification Required
  • Demonstrated successful experience working in an urban school setting
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with staff and parents
