What are the responsibilities and job description for the AmeriCorps High School Part Time Tutor position at Amarillo ISD?
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
AISD AmeriCorps service program is designed to help at-risk students K-5 with literacy skills, during the school day. AISD AmeriCorps also provides after school activities for identified students in the ESD (Extended School Day) program. These activities will benefit students emotionally, academically, physically and socially.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 17 years of age on or prior to August 15 of each school year
Senior at an AISD high school
75 overall GPA
95% overall attendance in school- preferred
Passed English II EOC or equivalent
Be on track for graduation
Must be a US citizen or legal resident
Must have own transportation

Strong commitment to community service
Communicate effectively with fellow members, school and AmeriCorps staff
Exhibit a strong work ethic (responsibility, dedication, excellent attendance, accurate
timesheet completion)
Effective verbal and written communications skills as well as a high degree of literacy and
higher order thinking skills
Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
Follow written and/or oral directions and exercise good judgement
Work effectively and harmoniously with students and school personnel is essential
Ability to instruct a small group of students
Ability to adhere to all codes of conduct and/or related policies and procedures of program
schools and organizations with which Amarillo ISD AmeriCorps serves and collaborates.
Work Conditions
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office/educational equipment including personal computer,
tablets, Smart Board, etc.
Posture: Prolonged sitting, standing and walking; bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and
twisting
Motion: Repetitive hand motions, reaching
Lifting: Lifting and carrying (less than 50 pounds)
Environment: Must be able to work with frequent interruptions in a variety of educational
settings and maintain professional demeanor under stress; work inside and outside (exposure
to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise
Regular attendance is an essential function.
Minimum Experience
Working toward a high school diploma by end of school year
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Listen to children read and respond accordingly.
- Work with children one-to-one or in small groups at assigned service site
- Follow instructions given by classroom teacher
- Relate with elementary children employing patience and authority.
- Transport self to and from work sites.
- Attend training classes at Caprock High School as well as special training sessions.
- Establish with students a rapport that is friendly, but not familiar.
- Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.
- Keep the teacher informed of student progress.
- Maintain a positive and professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members through effective communication both verbally and written.
- Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Keep the teacher informed of interactions with students.
- Be flexible in working with all students.
- Maintain confidentiality in all matters.
- Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Follow the AISD Student Code of Conduct and Dress Code.
