The Robotic Manipulation organization is looking for a software development engineer who can deliver creative software solutions to advance the state-of-the art in robot perception and action planning. You will be part of a team that owns the basic research to unlock new abilities, bringing advancements to production, optimizing for speed, stability, and building the supporting web services. Our work spans real-time software, machine learning engineering, computer vision, big data, simulation and more.
Our team launched the first large-scale Robotic Manipulation capability in 2020 (Robin). The solution has now scaled to a fleet of >1300 and has shipped >3B packages. No comparable solutions exist in the world. We followed up with newer robots (Cardinal and Sparrow). It's time to expand our work to include more types of robots and larger fleets of robots in order to scale our supply chain.

Our team builds software to enable our robots to understand their environment and manipulate objects in that environment. We research, invent, and use machine learning models to detect, track, and pick up objects in the scene for all manipulation robots. We develop and maintain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for object detection, grasping, and quality assessment. These include 1) Object detection and grasping accuracy (Manual exception rate, First Pass Yield (FPY) 2) Grasp quality evaluation (Segmentation Mean Average Precision (MAP) and Multi-pick detection rate). We optimize task execution by providing our scene analysis and grasping algorithms to planning systems, including: Motion planning, Item Detection (ID) and Consolidation planning. This integration enhances overall system performance and efficiency.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. As a Software Engineer, You Will
- Identify and develop software solutions to current business problems
- Work with your manager and team to create milestones and deliverables
- Participate in daily scrums and reviews with development teams
- Develop documentation and lead reviews with other engineers
- Write code and unit tests and integrate code with other software and hardware components
- Prototype and test concepts or features, both through simulation tools and emulators and with live robotic equipment
- Work directly with customers to test software prototypes and incorporate feedback
- Utilize Amazon Robotics and Amazon engineering tools, processes and technologies

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- 3 years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2 years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
- 3 years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
