Senior Technical Program Manager - Shape the Future of Books Discovery at Amazon
Passionate about books and reading? The Discovery & Recommendations Experience team helps customers find books they love through they love through relevant content recommendations and innovative shopping experiences. We are looking for a Senior Technical Product Manager to lead the technical execution of a strategic new initiative that will transform how millions of customers discover and engage with books. You'll orchestrate complex technical programs involving multiple teams across Books, Kindle, and Audible organizations, driving architectural decisions and technical strategy that will shape the future of our digital retail experience.
In this role, you'll own end-to-end technical program management of critical business initiatives, partnering with product, engineering, and UX teams. You'll be accountable for driving technical strategy, managing complex systems integration, and establishing new mechanisms while ensuring architectural integrity and operational excellence. The ideal candidate combines deep technical acumen with exemplary program and stakeholder management skills, and has a proven track record of delivering large-scale technical solutions.
Key job responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Technical Execution
• Lead end-to-end technical program management for strategic Books discovery, ML and personalization initiatives, including architecture reviews, technical roadmap development, and cross-team implementation
• Drive technical strategy and execution across distributed teams, managing dependencies and ensuring alignment between business requirements and technical solutions
• Partner with central personalization teams to integrate new capabilities and drive innovation in book discovery
• Drive infrastructure cost planning in partnership with broader Store organization
Program Management & Operational Excellence
• Develop and maintain comprehensive program plans, risk mitigation strategies, and technical documentation for complex, multi-team initiatives
• Establish and optimize program management mechanisms, including metrics tracking, status reporting, and operational excellence frameworks
• Lead operational excellence initiatives, including data privacy compliance and customer profile management
• Orchestrate cross-functional program execution, including sprint planning, milestone tracking, and dependency management
• Implement best practices for technical program management and drive continuous improvement initiatives
Cross-functional Leadership & Stakeholder Management
• Partner with product and engineering leadership to define technical requirements, evaluate trade-offs, and drive architectural decisions
• Lead cross-functional working groups and foster collaboration between engineering, product, design, and business teams
• Manage comprehensive program communications with executives, including regular updates on delivery progress, risks, and mitigation strategies
• Collaborate with finance to drive quarterly demand goal reporting for the Store organization
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 7 years of working directly with engineering teams experience
- 5 years of technical product or program management experience
- 3 years of software development experience
- 5 years of technical program management working directly with software engineering teams experience
- Experience managing programs across cross functional teams, building processes and coordinating release schedules
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5 years of project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, quality, along with risk and critical path management experience
- Experience managing projects across cross functional teams, building sustainable processes and coordinating release schedules
- Experience defining KPI's/SLA's used to drive multi-million dollar businesses and reporting to senior leadership
- Experience with ML/AI systems, recommendation engines, or personalization technologies
- Strong understanding of distributed systems architecture
- Proven ability to influence without authority in a matrixed organization
- Excellence in technical documentation and executive communication
- Experience with data analytics and metrics-driven decision making
- Track record of driving technical innovation and process improvements
- Background in building scalable, high-performance systems
- PMP or similar program management certification
- Experience working with global, distributed teams

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $133,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $231,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
