Our client is a mission-driven non-profit seeking a Head of Finance who can expand their impact, lead financial strategy, oversee accounting operations, and ensure long-term financial sustainability.
Position Overview:
As a key member of the leadership team, the Head of Finance will be responsible for the overall financial health and strategic direction of the organization. This role will oversee budgeting, financial planning, reporting, compliance, and risk management, while also providing hands-on leadership for accounting functions. The ideal candidate has a strong background in non-profit financial management, experience leading teams, and a passion for driving mission-aligned financial decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability
- Partner with the Executive Director and Board to provide insights and recommendations on financial health, risk, and opportunities
- Lead financial planning, including budgeting, forecasting, and multi-year financial modeling
- Monitor key financial metrics and drive data-informed decision-making
- Oversee all accounting functions, including month-end close, reporting, payroll, and cash flow management
- Supervise and mentor a finance team of two, ensuring efficiency and accuracy
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard financial assets
- Optimize financial systems and processes to improve reporting and operational effectiveness
- Ensure compliance with non-profit accounting standards (GAAP, FASB) and regulatory requirements
- Manage grant accounting, tracking, and reporting to funders
- Lead the annual audit and tax filings (Form 990), working with external auditors and tax advisors
- Identify financial risks and develop mitigation strategies
- Prepare and present financial reports, analysis, and insights to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee
- Collaborate with program leaders to align financial planning with organizational goals
- Foster strong relationships with funders, donors, and key financial partners
Qualifications:
- 10 years of finance and accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within a non-profit organization
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
- Strong proficiency in non-profit accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct) and Excel
- Expertise in GAAP, fund accounting, grant management, and financial reporting
- Proven ability to lead teams, collaborate with executives, and communicate financial insights to non-financial stakeholders
- Hybrid role requiring a presence in the Boston office multiple days per week
Salary : $125,000 - $150,000
