Position Summary

School Safety creates a secure and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors by closely monitoring school grounds, enforcing safety protocols, and responding swiftly to emergencies. As the primary point of contact for parents, visitors, community members, and other external parties, School Safety represents the school with warmth, professionalism, and courtesy, ensuring every interaction leaves a positive impression. Additionally, School Safety serves as a central administrative resource, fulfilling a variety of essential tasks to support the school's smooth operation.

Essential Responsibilities

Be the gatekeeper to our school building:

  • Assist visitors with directions and secure proper identification.
  • Detect and report unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles, and activities.
  • Work with the Principal and the Director of Operations to notify police, and/or appropriate emergency personnel of any emergency, potentially dangerous, or unusual situations.
  • Support at arrival, dismissal and other high-volume instances

Ensure safety and efficient reporting:

  • Monitor hallways, stairwells, toilet facilities, outside facilities, and other public and unsupervised places of the school to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff and the security of the facility.
  • Assist with fire drills, crises, and other emergency building evacuations and situations.
  • Assist administrators and staff in crises and emergencies.
  • Ensure a smooth traffic flow of students through the hallways, assisting students with on-time arrival to class and to assigned locations.
  • Assist with arrival and dismissal of students ensuring the school community is safe.
  • Update security records, logs, and reports.
  • Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs as directed.
  • Support the school community by answering the school's main telephone line and support with the operations email.
  • Ensure all persons entering the school are documented via the visitor management system SchoolPass and the student system, Swipe.
  • Support with data entry into PowerSchool following the school policy.

Build culture with staff, students and families:

  • Promote school culture by greeting students, families, and visitors.
  • Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, families, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
  • Promote student responsibility for behavior and attitude by serving as a role model.
  • Contribute to the organization's image by maintaining professional attire and grooming.

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of full-time experience as a highly effective security guard, law enforcement or equivalent ensuring safety and maintaining a secure environment.
  • 16-Hour Security Guard Training
  • Comfort utilizing technology to communicate, track and organize work and information (e.g. Google Suite, documents, spreadsheets)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Great time and task management; an ability to prioritize, manage multiple obligations and initiatives and follow through
  • Strong systems thinker, a capacity to envision, plan, and implement new/revised protocols and practices that streamline or improve school operations functions
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment; flexible, able to work autonomously as well as on a team and to take direction as needed
  • Strong attention to detail; able to develop and maintain organizational and documentation systems
  • Strong analysis, negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • A deep sense of ownership and responsibility

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2 years of experience in School Safety or School Operations environment
  • Ability to speak, read, write and understand the Spanish language
  • Private security or public police experience, including knowledge of school & local laws and search & seizure
  • Use of student information systems to report, track and monitor enrollment, attendance and ensure compliance and funding (e.g. ATS, PowerSchool).
  • Strong command of all Google programs

Work Environment/Physical Effort:

  • Regularly required to sit, stand for long periods of time, walk, climb stairs, speak loudly and clearly, visually observe, hear, operate a computer, and other classroom, school and office equipment, reach with hands and arms, bend down, and must occasionally lift, move and/or support up to 20 pounds. Work is being performed in a traditional multi-floor school environment with limited to no elevator access.

12 month work schedule

Compensation:

Amber Charter Schools strictly follow a salary schedule for each role to ensure our continued commitment towards pay equity. The expected hourly rate for this role is $38,000 to $43,600 depending on verified relevant work experience, highest level of completed education, and required certifications and/or licenses for the role. This is a non- exempt position.
