What are the responsibilities and job description for the HIM Technician position at Amberwell Health Hiawatha?
FUNCTION:
Perform functions related to document imaging, document retrieval (department rounding), processing of hospital death records and files, and reception and release of information to ensure compliance with guidelines/requirements related to patient confidentiality and release of information. Prepare and scan documents, ensuring correct patient identifiers. Perform quality control to ensure the electronic document/image posts to the correct patients visit.

Other: Hospital personnel, medical staff, other medical facility personnel, some public/patients.
EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:
According to OSHA standards, this position is classified as low risk with little or no risk of exposure.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Computer, scanner, phone, copier, fax machine, printer.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Prepares all paper records arriving in the department for scanning. Keeps current on the pulling of the death files.
- Processes and picks-up paperwork as instructed on a daily basis.
Knowledge of scanning equipment and ability to use it effectively.
- Effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
Greets, directs, and/or assists personnel and the general public. This includes demonstrating competency in the release of EHR information pursuant to applicable Amberwell Hiawatha policies and procedures, state and federal statues, and regulations.
- Perform release of information to ensure compliance with guidelines/requirements related to patient confidentiality and release of information.
Ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Demonstrate excellent customer relations, telephone and organizational skills.
- Abide by the standards of American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Code of Ethics. Concerns involving compliance issues are forwarded to the Manager of HIM for action.
- Other duties as assigned.
SHIFT DAYS/HOURS:
8:00 to 4:30pm. Subject to change based on business necessity.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School diploma.
Experience: Previous work experience preferred in the health information management field.
Certificates, License, Registrations:
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities: Ability to speak, read, write and to follow written and oral instructions. Must possess a
high accuracy rate and organizational skills, as well as computer skills. Proficient in
typing and spelling. Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality.
Physical: Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, and/or 10 pounds of force frequently, or negligible constantly. Walking or standing to a significant degree or sitting constantly and pushing/pulling controls.
