Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Lab Manager to lead and oversee the daily operations of the analytical laboratory at our client's petroleum refinery near Pittsburgh. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing lab personnel, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, maintaining quality assurance protocols, and supporting production operations through accurate and timely analytical testing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise, train, and schedule laboratory staff to ensure efficient 24/7 lab operations.
- Oversee testing and analysis of refinery feedstocks, in-process streams, finished products, and environmental samples in accordance with ASTM and EPA standards.
- Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and timely reporting of analytical results to operations and engineering teams.
- Maintain laboratory QA/QC programs including calibration, maintenance, and validation of equipment.
- Develop, implement, and monitor lab safety procedures in accordance with OSHA and refinery policies.
- Coordinate with production and technical teams to troubleshoot process issues and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Manage laboratory budget, inventory, and procurement of consumables, reagents, and equipment.
- Ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations.
- Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits (e.g., ISO, EPA, internal QA audits).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related science field (Master’s preferred).
- 5 years of laboratory experience in a refinery, petrochemical, or industrial manufacturing environment.
- 2 years of supervisory or management experience.
- Strong working knowledge of analytical instruments (e.g., GC, ICP, FTIR, XRF) and wet chemistry techniques.
- Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Working Conditions:
- This role is based on-site at the refinery.
- Requires occasional work during off-hours or weekends to support production schedules.
- Must adhere to all site PPE requirements and be comfortable working in an industrial environment.
