What are the responsibilities and job description for the Office Assistant (Medical Histories) position at Ambulatory Anesthesia Associates?
Overview:
- Check patient insurance benefits and obtain a medical history on the patient prior to their scheduled appointment.
- Communicate pre-operative instructions to the patient.
- Communicate financial responsibilities to the patient.
Duties:
- Communication between AAA and patients is of the UTMOST IMPORTANCE.
- Obtain medical histories of the scheduled patients by asking specific, detailed questions.
- If needed, obtain pre-anesthesia evaluation and/or office visit notes and communicate this information to the Anesthesiologist.
- Relay instructions to the patient/parent/caregiver prior to their appointment. (For example - the types and dosage of medication that they are permitted to take, instructions regarding food and liquid intake, etc.)
- Verify patient insurance information (medical & dental) and level of benefits.
- Verify guardianship of patient and save paperwork in appropriate folder.
- Communicate patient financial responsibilities and collect any fees, deductibles, out of pocket costs, or coinsurance costs.
- Charge credit/debit cards for the following day.
- Contact doctor for premeds and consults. Call in any pre-medications to pharmacy if warranted.
- Answer incoming calls in a timely manner and route callers as required.
- Check voice mail, e-mail and SMS as needed.
Requirements
- Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent with specialized course work in medical terminology.
- Billing and insurance experience desired.
- General office practices such as typing, filing, and accounting required.
- Associates degree preferred.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of increasingly responsible related experience.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Ability to effectively communicate with the public - verbally and in writing. ACCURACY AND ORGANIZATION SKILLS ARE VERY IMPORTANT.
- Ability to effectively communicate with all our doctors, referrals, office staff and coworkers - verbally and in writing.
- Ability to be a good team player - helping coworkers in any way needed.
- Ability to keep office information confidential with respect to patients and doctors.
- Follow all office guidelines set forth by the doctors and the office manager.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is essential. In addition, knowledge of billing and insurance preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
