What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gender, Queer and Critical Race Theory Faculty position at AMDA?
AMDA College of the Performing Arts, with campuses in New York City and Hollywood, is one of the foremost post-secondary performing arts colleges in the country. AMDA offers various pathways for students to receive unparalleled performing arts education taught by world-class industry professionals, including Professional Conservatory Certificates as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees (Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Associate of Occupational Studies, Master of Fine Arts and Master of Arts).
AMDA is seeking individuals passionate, student-centered, with a strong foundation in critical theory, race and ethnicity studies, gender theory, and intersectionality for part-time adjunct instructors. Faculty are to be familiar with key text and figures to teach Queer, Gender and Theory in Television or Critical Race Theory in Television Courses.
These courses are delivered in person on our Los Angele Campus using a combination of instructional technologies that include Canvas. Teaching assignment(s) may include courses within the discipline of TV and Film Writing, Performing Arts Education, or Arts and Humanities. Faculty members at AMDA are responsible for providing highly effective instruction through well-prepared classes, relevant assignments, fair and holistic assessment of learning, clear documentation of student progress, and support of academic success for all students.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Providing instruction in accordance with established curricula, course outlines, and class schedules
- Creating and maintaining an environment which emphasizes learning, encourages free discussion of ideas and critical thinking
- Providing a learning vehicle for diversity and inclusion content
- Evaluating progress of students concerning educational matters and assessing student work
- Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics
- Maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter areas
- Fulfilling professional responsibilities of a part-time adjunct faculty member
- Maintaining accurate academic records
- Performing other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- A terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in fields such as Queer Studies, Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Cultural Studies, or any related discipline focusing on intersections of queer theory, gender, and race.
- A Demonstrated expertise in the history of performing arts education, including familiarity with key figures, movements, and pedagogical approaches.
- In-depth knowledge of key concepts and frameworks within critical race theory and gender studies, including intersectionality, structural racism, systemic oppression, privilege, and critical pedagogy.
- A minimum of three years of teaching Cultural Studies, Sociology or Anthropology with a focus on Race and Ethnicity In a graduate level.
- Experience teaching at the graduate level, with a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
- Proven ability to design engaging and inclusive course curricula that address contemporary issues in race, gender, and sexuality.
- Engagement in research that addresses issues of race, gender, power relations, and social justice, demonstrating a commitment to advancing knowledge in these areas.
- Facilitation of discussions on sensitive topics related to race, gender, and power dynamics in a respectful and inclusive manner.
- Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to articulate complex theories and ideas clearly and provide constructive feedback and mentorship.
- Ability to conduct qualitative and quantitative research related to race and gender, including familiarity with research methodologies that highlight the experiences and perspectives of marginalized communities.
- Familiarity with contemporary debates and emerging scholarship within these fields.
- Experience with innovative teaching methodologies that focus on creating an engaging, student-centered learning environment
- Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and practices that enhance student success at higher education institutions, including effective use of technology
- Excellent oral/written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to academic excellence, exceptional service and providing a dynamic climate for life-long learning
- Successful candidates will be able to apply their discipline expertise in a manner/context that is relevant to emerging performing artists, in an online environment
- Active scholarship in related field
Position Information:
- The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $60.00 per hour. For administrative tasks assigned or approved outside of classroom teaching, hours will be paid at a standard rate for $35.00 per hour.
- This position is subject to a background check upon a conditional offer of employment and a reference check.
- This is a fully in-person role.
