The Functional Medicine Physician provides an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors, and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.
The Functional Medicine Physician provides clinical leadership to ensure treatment is evidence-based and outcome driven. In addition to having highly trained psychiatrists to collaborate with in each clinic, the use of master’s level clinical historians, psychological testing, neuropsychological screening tools, functional brain imaging, and emerging technology-based treatments such as TMS, HBOT, and neurofeedback, you will be in a healthy and aesthetically pleasing work environment. You will also have multiple opportunities for writing and speaking, if that appeals to you.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive Integrative Medicine exams and follow-up appointments
- Assist in the development, promotion and delivery of the Amen Clinics Method as it relates to brain and body health
- Utilize nutraceutical, pharmacological, neurophysiological, and behavioral approaches in the treatment of patients and families
- Management of patient case load: completing timely reports, maintaining charts, addressing patient concerns, and ensure the privacy and proper handling of patient information in accordance with State and Federal regulation
- Remain current with functional medicine, brain imaging, psychiatric, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical methods
- Assess potential causes and effects of toxic, metabolic, infectious, inflammatory, hormonal, and other factors in:
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders
- Mood disorders
- Anxiety disorders
- Psychotic disorders
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Addictions
- Traumatic brain injury
- Obesity
- Biomedical illness
- Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Etc.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Graduate from an accredited school of medicine (M.D. or D.O. degree)
- IFMCP training (certification preferred)
- ABOiM, AIHM integrative residency or Fellowship a plus
- Experience working in a fee for service setting in which operational efficiency, the fostering of referent relationships, providing high quality clinical work, and establishing positive therapeutic relationships is a core part of the role
- Experience dealing with a wide variety of medical issues, including hormone imbalances, infections and nutrients deficiencies, and understanding the role they play in contributing to and/or complicating mental illness
- Time management, organization and computer skills and ability to work independently and within a team are critical.
- Empathy, emotional stability, ability to relate well to others, good communications skills and above all genuine care and regard for the patient are required.
- Willingness to learn to use brain imaging in clinical practice. We will train you on the applications of brain SPECT imaging in psychiatry and functional medicine and how to utilize this data in patient evaluations.
- Dedication to helping individuals, families and systems (such as schools, businesses, and treatment facilities) reach their full potential by creating and developing “brain healthy” strategies and practices.
- Interacts frequently with patients, clinic personnel and outside referral sources personnel by telephone, correspondence and personal contact.
