What are the responsibilities and job description for the Able Bodied Seaman position at Ameri-Force?
Position Purpose: This position is a crew member aboard one of the Company’s U.S. Flag self-unloading free flowing bulk vessels operating in the Great Lakes. This position sets a strong example in safe working and environmental practices. This is a general utility position with a primary role to assist with general duties aboard the vessel as assigned.

Key Activities
· Understands and works in accordance with company’s safety policy. Proactively watches for, reports, and corrects unsafe acts or conditions. Sets a strong example regarding safe working practices and good seamanship. Utilizes the Company’s Stop-Talk-Proceed procedure in all aspects of daily routine, while performing assigned tasks.
· Understands and works in accordance with company’s environmental protection policy and processes.
· Completes company and regulatory required training.
· Will be assigned as a day worker but may be assigned watches.
· Assist on deck, in the engine room, and in the galley as directed. Duties include, but are not limited to, general vessel maintenance, cleaning, chipping and painting.
· Handling lines aboard the vessel or on the dock and operate winches while the ship is docking or undocking.
· Prepare the vessel for cargo loading and unloading by opening or securing hatch covers.
· Assist with the discharge of cargo by operating gates.
· Shoveling of cargo spillage in the conveyor tunnel or on deck.
· Loading stores and supplies.
Interaction: This position reports to the First Mate when working on deck, the Chief Engineer or the First Assistant when working in the engineering spaces, or to the Cook when working in the galley. There is significant interaction with the crew of the vessel and dock personnel when in port.
Education and/or Experience Required (including certifications):
· US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with a minimum endorsement of Able Seaman-Limited or Unlimited
· US Department of Homeland Security Transportation Worker Identification Credential (“TWIC”)
· A certification of passing a test for dangerous drugs or participating in a US Coast Guard dangerous drug testing program
· Passport (for non-U.S. Citizens)
Key Competencies (non-technical behavioral skills, such as presentation, negotiation, customer service skills), in priority order. Select from “key competencies for job descriptions” list:
· Must be able to effectively communicate in the Company’s designated operating language, English

Other (i.e., physical requirements, travel, etc. that is not covered above):
· Must be eligible to work in the United States
· Must be eligible to enter Canada
· Authorization to work by a Company designated physician is required.
· Must be able to climb stairs and ladders throughout the vessel
· Must be able to lift forty (40) pounds
· Travel to and from Company vessels located at various ports in the U.S. Great Lakes region in the United States and Canada as well as to Company and training facilities as assigned
