Job Description: Sheet Metal Mechanic (Shipyard)
Job Summary
As a Sheet Metal Mechanic, your role is pivotal in the shipyard’s operations, where you will work extensively on marine and naval vessels. Leveraging your expertise in sheet metal fabrication and assembly, you will be involved in creating and repairing structural components of ships. Your knowledge of naval specifications and standards will aid in ensuring the reliability and safety of the vessels we service.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
- Fabricate, assemble, and install a variety of sheet metal products and structures according to blueprints and specifications.
- Operate various machinery and equipment including shears, brakes, and presses to shape and mold metal sheets for different parts of the naval vessels.
- Inspect and verify the dimensions of the structures using precision measuring instruments to ensure adherence to design specifications and navy standards.
- Collaborate with welding teams and other departments to ensure seamless integration of the fabricated structures into the larger assembly.
- Conduct repairs of existing structures, identifying issues, and performing necessary adjustments or replacements.
- Adhere to safety protocols, maintaining a safe and organized workspace to prevent accidents and protect team members.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team to ensure project timelines are met, contributing expertise and effort where needed.
Essential Skills & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in sheet metal fabrication, preferably in a shipyard or naval environment.
- Familiarity with navy and maritime standards and specifications related to metal structures.
- Skilled in using a variety of tools and equipment necessary for sheet metal fabrication.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings accurately.
- Strong attention to detail, with an emphasis on quality and precision in all work performed.
Safety & Environmental Factors:
All employees are expected to adhere to the company’s safety policies to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. This role involves working under extreme hot or cold conditions and requires the physical ability to stand for the entire shift, use hands for various tasks, ascend stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. Team members must occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close, distant, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
