What are the responsibilities and job description for the Policy Specialist position at American Academy of Ophthalmology Inc?
The American Academy of Ophthalmology is looking for a Policy Specialist. Working closely with the Director of Public Health Advocacy, the Policy Specialist works to advance federal policy and legislative strategy affecting the Academy’s public health priorities. Provides administrative support for the Public Health Advocacy Department as well as cross-divisional support for other federal affairs advocacy efforts as needed.
- Supports Public Health Advocacy Department by monitoring activities of Congress and Federal agencies with an emphasis on policy issues relating to access to pharmaceutical drugs and devices, federal appropriations, physician workforce, vision research and health equity. At the direction of the Public Health Advocacy Director, attends and reports on Capitol Hill briefings, coalition meetings, and other assigned meetings with external stakeholders.
- Under the direction of the Director of Public Health Advocacy, provides cross divisional support for other senior federal affairs staff, including conducting assigned policy research projects, developing Academy letters, issue briefs, and other advocacy-related materials in response to congressional and regulatory matters impacting the field of ophthalmology.
- Provides administrative support for the Public Health Advocacy Department, including meeting scheduling, coordination, agenda development, minutes, and internal and external reports for the Academy advocacy policy committees (i.e., Research, Regulatory and External Scientific Relations, Artificial Intelligence, Eye Banks and Public Health) and workgroups (i.e., community health centers, telehealth, pharmacy compounding workgroups) as needed. Working with the Director and committee/workgroup volunteers, provides administrative support to development process for Academy policy statements and facilitates advancing statements for Board’s approval.
- Prepares content for the AAO website and materials for Washington Report Express and other Academy publications on issues within the public health policy portfolio.
- Responds to requests for information from Academy members, government representatives and outside organizations.
Requirements:
- Strong understanding of the Federal legislative and regulatory process, healthcare policymakers, and relevant congressional committees and their purposes and functions.
- Experience researching policy and regulatory issues in the healthcare arena, ideally in the areas of pharmaceutical drug and devices, drug pricing, telehealth, artificial intelligence, health equity, healthcare workforce, federal appropriations and others.
- Proficient Internet research skills and familiarity with government and outside organizations web sites
- Proficient in the use of MS Office applications
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels, including to external contacts, Academy staff and Academy leadership

Experience handling multiple projects simultaneously and completing them in timely manner - Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team and respond to member inquiries or requests
- Bachelor’s degree in public policy or related field
- 1-3 years of professional experience working in health policy, public policy, or governmental affairs.
