Manager, Applications Development


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:


Senior Director, Applications Development


BASIC FUNCTIONS:


Manage the design, development, testing, and support of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) enterprise cross-functional, multi-platform software applications, and the design, development, and testing of corrective fixes, enhancements, and smaller work efforts in support of business operations. Assist with the development and implementation of technical strategic priorities.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Manage the design and development of new applications, systems software, and enhancements to existing applications.

2. Assist the department leadership with strategic direction for applications effectiveness and efficiency. Stay abreast of emerging technology trends and provide recommendations on new or improved software systems to enhance functionality and increase delivery capacity.

3. Analyze, define, and document requirements for data, workflow, logical processes, operating system environment, interfaces with other systems, and internal and external controls.

4. Manage and provide strategic and technical guidance to the application team in support of business operations to ensure expected application performance levels are achieved.

5. Collaborate with development team and users to understand the scope of work, priorities, and requirements for development and work towards design consensus.

6. Assist agile teams with work effort estimates and development of project plan details and technical specifications. Serve as primary liaison between development staff and product owner when necessary.

7. Supervise and mentor assigned staff and encourage a work environment that promotes inclusion and belonging of all staff. Ensure staff operate in a fiscally prudent manner, maintain confidentiality, operate with the highest ethical standards, and provide excellent service to members and volunteers. Provide leadership and guidance to staff on technical functionality, resource management, and project management to ensure expected applications performance levels are achieved.

8. Perform applications programming activities, including coding, testing, debugging, documentation, and modification.

9. Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems, liaising with vendors as needed.

10. Perform other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION:


Bachelor's degree in computer science or an equivalent combination of relevant education/certifications and work experience required.


EXPERIENCE:


At least four years' related experience in software development and/or programming design and systems management required. Must have experience with full development life cycle, including requirements gathering, design, and testing, as well as supervising technical staff or serving as a technical team lead. Deep understanding of programming languages and knowledge of web technologies essential, including .NET, ASP.NET, VB.NET, SSL, HTTP, MS SQL, MSSSIR, MS SSRS, Object Oriented design principals, C#, HTML, and XML/XSL. Experience with Web technologies (SharePoint, CSS, Java) preferred.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS:


Must be able to perform complex applications programming, effectively lead a technical team, manage multiple priorities simultaneously within tight deadlines, be flexible with changing and overlapping priorities, deliver/lead large scale applications on time and within budget, take initiative to move projects forward, collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents and liaise between technical team and end users, communicate and document technical concepts and ideas to a non-technical audience, work both independently and as part of a team, and promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment, with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Excellent analytical, project management, diplomacy, verbal/written communication, and leadership skills required. Occasional evening/weekend work and some travel are required.


A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $115,563.65 - $121,983.94. Compensation decisions take into account a wide range of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, skills, certifications, geographic location, business needs, and organizational policies. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer.
