Senior Manager, Donor Communications


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Chief Development Officer


BASIC FUNCTIONS

Design, manage, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive donor communications and stewardship program that supports the full donor lifecycle and achieves American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strategic goals. In partnership with Chief Development Officer, create and implement a work plan and annual budget for donor communications and donor experience initiatives.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develop and implement marketing and communication strategies to increase prospect and donor engagement opportunities and enhance the visibility of the AAP as a philanthropic brand.

2. Conceptualize and produce a continually evolving set of donor-focused communications, including impact reports, case statements, donor newsletters, campaign materials, and digital content to support fundraising strategy, donor commitments, and revenue goals.

3. Design and maintain a robust donor communications calendar, integrating digital storytelling, social media campaigns, and email marketing to enhance donor engagement.

4. Analyze donor stewardship activities using data-driven insights to inform strategic decisions. Develop performance metrics to measure success and recommend changes as needed.

5. Develop and implement effective messaging strategies tailored to various donor segments, ensuring alignment with philanthropic goals and maximizing donor engagement and retention.

6. Work collaboratively with colleagues across the AAP to collect and share stories that highlight the transformative outcomes of donor contributions and amplify the organization's philanthropic brand position.

7. Supervise and mentor assigned staff. Encourage a work environment that promotes inclusion and belonging of all staff. Support ongoing staff development, help set objectives, evaluate performance, and promote and enhance staff capacity in skills necessary to achieve goals. Ensure staff operate in a fiscally prudent manner, maintain confidentiality, operate with the highest ethical standards, and provide excellent service to members and volunteers.

8. Keep current on best practices in donor engagement and recognition and leverage knowledge to recommend and actualize innovative enhancements to AAP Development initiatives.

9. Plan and execute donor stewardship events, ensuring seamless onsite support and an exceptional donor experience.

10. Develop and manage assigned budgets. Track, monitor, and report on the department's financial performance and make recommendations for corrections to ensure resources are allocated efficiently to maximize impact.

11. Oversee the work of consultants and other external partners to ensure smooth operations and high-quality execution of project deliverables.

12. Build and foster relationships with AAP staff to support a culture of philanthropy in alignment with organizational goals.

13. Perform all other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION


Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required.


EXPERIENCE

At least four years' related experience required, including copywriting and content creation for digital platforms, writing for philanthropic audiences, and supervising staff or serving as a project lead. Experience with content creation for social channels and working in a nonprofit fundraising environment preferred.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS


Excellent organizational, project management, interpersonal, diplomacy, critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills required, as well as exceptional writing and editing skills with a focus on compelling narratives that communicate organizational impact that build strong emotional connections with donors. Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office and the ability to learn and apply new technologies; experience with document collaboration platforms (eg, SharePoint), SmartSheet, Salesforce, and virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx, Teams) preferred. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of donor information, work both independently and as part of a team, manage multiple priorities simultaneously within strict deadlines, take initiative, think creatively, pay close attention to detail, collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents, and promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Some travel and evening/weekend work required, as well as the need for flexibility in arranging work schedule to accommodate availability of members and external partners.


A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $107,395.12 - $113,361.56. Compensation decisions take into account a wide range of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, skills, certifications, geographic location, business needs, and organizational policies. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer.
