The Clean Power Institute (CPI) is ACP's 501(c)3 affiliate organization. CPI's mission is to build the public support and workforce to fuel the clean energy future. CPI advances its mission through programming that builds a stable, skilled, and diverse workforce and creates strategic partnerships that promote the benefits of clean energy investments across the country.

Position Summary

The Clean Power Institute (CPI) seeks a vice president (VP) of programs to design and drive the strategy and implementation of all programs. CPI's programming is focused on two pillars : workforce development in clean energy and strategic partnerships to advance clean energy growth. Embedded within both focus areas is diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As the 501c(3) affiliate of the American Clean Power Association (ACP), CPI incorporates the workforce priorities of industry partners into demand-driven programming. The VP is responsible for ensuring that programming is thoughtfully and strategically implemented to advance the most important priorities in building the clean energy workforce of the future, integrating input from various senior-level stakeholders across ACP, external stakeholders, and the workforce.

Reporting to the executive director of CPI, the VP, programs will build and manage a team of three employees (with additional growth expected), serving as an exemplar of CPI's mission, vision, and values. This role is based in Washington, DC. Remote candidates will be considered with high preference given to candidates who reside in DC.

Visioning, Strategic Planning & Program Implementation

  • Lead the process for defining and iterating CPI programmatic priorities, building from existing initiatives and integrating principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging into the process and plan.
  • Implement the program strategy, working with partners across a range of stakeholder groups including community colleges, health and safety industry leaders, ACP subject matter experts, and partner nonprofit organizations.
  • Lead the development of a learning management system that structures and grows CPI's burgeoning certification and course offerings, ensuring it provides the highest-level satisfaction rates to external users.
  • Design and implement the strategy to build grassroots' support for clean energy projects.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with individuals directly experiencing CPI's programming to ground-truth our strategies.
  • Set goals and track progress to them, building a system to regularly reflect on successes and opportunities to improve.

Relationship-Building & Public Engagement

  • Cultivate relationships with industry members, nonprofit leaders, and aligned others to advance CPI's programming.
  • As needed, represent CPI publicly for speaking engagements and in field operations with local stakeholder groups.
  • Working with ACP's communications team, pro-actively communicate CPI's programmatic advancements, writing up descriptions of programmatic work and results for media, stakeholder meetings, and grant documentation.
  • People Management & Culture

  • Build your team's culture to reflect CPI / ACP's core values, ensuring that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are centered.
  • Build and manage a program team to develop personally and professionally while achieving goals, providing exceptional guidance and direction.
  • Pro-actively provide updates and progress to results to the executive director and executive team members.
  • Operations

  • Be accountable for all funds flowing through CPI programming by developing, tracking, and adhering to budgets.
  • Develop revenue models to fund programmatic work on-going.
  • Education, Experience, Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree desired.
  • 15 years of related program management experience with a demonstrated track record of achieving programmatic goals.
  • 10 years of demonstrated leadership ability in influencing large and varied groups of people, including direct reports and both internal and external stakeholders in highly ambiguous environments.
  • Expertise in conceptualizing, developing, implementing, and tracking program quality, performance, outcomes, and impact within an organization or large business unit in an unstructured environment.
  • Understanding of the clean power industry and experience working for, or with, a clean energy company or companies is a plus.
  • Systems-thinking - demonstrated ability to identify the points of influence that will create change at scale.
  • Deep understanding of the fields of education and training, workforce development, grassroots' organizing, and diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • An eye for communications collateral - strong creative instincts and ability to assess quality of marketing materials.
  • Exceptional analytical abilities and a propensity to rely on data for decision-making while possessing the experience and judgment to make sound decisions in the absence of data.
  • Demonstrated experience fostering an internal team culture that centers the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Extensive management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, and manage performance of a program team.
  • Demonstrated experience building strong relationships across an organization and with senior-level partners such as corporations, donors, and / or volunteers of diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience communicating complex processes and ideas effectively to a variety of audiences within and outside an organization.
  • Professional maturity, with the ability to manage conflict, sensitive information, and complex / divergent interests.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Travel up to 20% annually.
  • Job Conditions

    We are a fast-paced, high-energy organization with a very ambitious agenda and a staff that is highly motivated. This position may experience high-level work demands and independent decision-making under tight timelines. Occasional travel outside of the Washington, DC area for meetings or events required. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. ACP will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

    We reasonably believe that the base salary range for this position is $190,000- 235,000. At ACP, a wide range of factors are considered when making compensation decisions including and not limited to skill set, experience, training, education, knowledge, and other business and organizational needs. ACP offers 401k, PTO and sick leave, commuter benefits, wellness reimbursement, and professional development / tuition reimbursements for eligible employees.
