About the Build Up Technical Internship Program : This position is part of the Build Up Technical Internship Program facilitated by the Historic Preservation Training Center. The Build Up Technical Internship Program is working to expand the National Park Service workforce while addressing critical maintenance needs by providing professional experiences in technical fields to students and recent graduates.

Location Details / Description : The Alaska Regional Office of the National Park Service is located in Anchorage, Alaska and hosts staff who manage the 15 national parks, monuments, preserves, and national historical parks, among other natural and cultural resources in Alaska. These protected areas cover over 54 million acres. Anchorage is Alaska's largest city, with a population of nearly 300,000. It serves as a cultural and economic hub in the state.
This position is planned to take place in-person at the Alaska Regional Office in Anchorage, but is remote negotiable (for the right candidate).

Position Overview : The ACE member will assist with the completion of documentation for the National Register of Historic Places of NPS heritage assets in Juneau, Alaska. This position will require site visits, in tandem with the Alaska Regional Office's Architectural Historian(s), to complete condition assessments, develop work orders to correct deficiencies, and take updated photographs. This work will culminate in a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.
Schedule : Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5pm.
Position Benefits
Living Allowance : The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours / week and will receive a living allowance of $1,000 / week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority : Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service and 640 hours of service. If the duration of a PLC-eligible term is not long enough for Members to accrue 640 hours of service (~16 weeks), the total hours served at the completion of the term may be eligible to be combined with hours accrued from another PLC-eligible term to meet the 640 hours requirement. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Direct Hiring Authority : T his position is classified as a DHA (Direct Hiring Authority) Internship. DHA positions target exceptional, current upper-level undergraduate or graduate students that are interested in pursuing careers with the NPS. DHA positions will be rigorous internships that develop the participant's technical and creative thinking abilities, leadership skills, and problem-solving capabilities. After successful completion of the internship and all DHA program requirements, and after graduation from the member's degree program, the member will be eligible to receive DHA non-competitive hiring eligibility.
Housing : Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the NPS.
Relocation Allowance : ACE members will have access to up to $2,000 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the intervie w process.
Professional Development Allowance : The ACE member will have access to $1,000 for pre-approved professional development uses.
Provided Training / Orientation : ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support.

Environmental Conditions / Hazards : The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions / hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff / members or resources.
Vehicle and Equipment Use / Safety : If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the NPS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the NPS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
