ABOUT THE ARTISTIC STAFF

The Artistic Staff of American Conservatory Theater is highly collaborative : though each member contributes different strengths and has distinct responsibilities, all work together to support the  mission of the theater , to advance our E.D.I. strategic plan, and to foster the artistic life of the organization. In addition to the specific duties below, the Literary Manager and Casting Associate will function as a valued member of a close-knit team, tasked with re-examining and re-imagining how we can better serve our communities of artists and audiences. Each member of the Artistic Staff is an ambassador to and fosters healthy relationships with artists locally and nation-wide.

Responsibilities :  (please note, this list is not exhaustive, but rather a representation of job duties)

NEW WORK & LITERARY MANAGEMENT

  • Review scripts in consideration for mainstage programming
  • With Director of Dramaturgy and New Works (DDNW), support the development of our commissioned works.

Serve as co-line producer for all workshops and readings

  • With writing residencies, workshops, and readings, co-create the most productive and inspiring environment imaginable, allowing for artists-in-residence to create their best work.
  • Manage literary submissions and oversee database; solicit scripts from agents / playwrights; provide script coverage to artistic team; maintain relationships with playwrights and agents; willingness to travel to see new work
  • Manage New Works budget (w / DDNW)
  • Assist in dramaturgical research, writing, collation (as assigned)
  • CASTING

  • Take a lead on casting for select mainstage shows as well as readings and workshops; as needed and within budget, support from outside contractors / casting directors will be provided.
  • Produce, schedule, and run annual EPAs (local and out-of-town as required).
  • Coordinate with outside casting directors / contractors, and lend support, on mainstage productions with commercial and / or regional partnerships.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to : collaborating with directors, generating actor lists, making agent and actor solicitations, setting up and managing auditions, making offers (w / general management), communicating with actors per our  commitments
  • Assist Conservatory and Young Conservatory casting / audition processes, as needed and assigned
  • Regularly attend local readings and productions to stay current on acting community; willingness to travel nationally to cover shows
  • ARTISTIC COMMUNICATIONS & COORDINATION

  • Along with the rest of the Artistic team, support productions as needed (attend and note read-throughs, runs, previews, etc.)
  • Contribute ideas and support the building of creative teams and artistic support staff (assistant directors, etc.)
  • Share responsibility of department budgets with Artistic team
  • Perform various admin tasks, including but not limited to : contributing to grant narratives, Artistic and CSV office and email communications, coordinating Opening Night gifts, as assigned
  • Contribute original written material, social media posts, and program content, as assigned by Marketing and approved by DDNW
  • Qualifications & Qualities :

  • The ability to create clear and compelling prose.
  • Diligence, attention to detail, and a collaborative spirit.
