Position Purpose: 

American Conservatory Theater (LORT b ) seeks a Sound & Video Design Associate to work closely with the A.C.T. Production Managers as a key production liaison between guest designers and all shops and departments. The primary focus will be managing the implementation of Sound and Video designs, execution of technical drawings, and associated paperwork for the main stage season. Although the emphasis will be on Sound and Video, the Sound & Video Design Associate will also work with the other production departments in a similar capacity. The Sound & Video Design Associate also provides design and technical support to shows and projects and participates in the technical planning, budget forecasting and other administrative duties across multiple ACT departments including production and the Conservatory. The S&V Associate will occasionally production manage or support the production management of events and rentals and will work across all A.C.T. venues as well as other venues as needed.

 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a key production liaison between designers, shops and all production staff during the design development process regarding questions, changes, revisions, technical coordination, deadlines and budgets for all main stage shows 
  • Serve as the Assistant Sound & Video Designer during all tech rehearsals and previews for all main stage shows.
  • Support Conservatory shows with planning, logistics, and technical support as well as installing and maintaining sound and video setups as assigned
  • Support events and rentals with planning, logistics, and technical support as well as installing and maintaining sound and video setups as assigned
  • Provide rehearsal support, including “draft” cues, for acting and musical rehearsals.
  • Participate in recruiting and hiring musicians for studio recording and for live performances as needed.
  • Provide administrative, logistic and practical support to all show specific music departments
  • Where necessary recruit additional design associates/assistants to support show specific work.
  • Effectively schedule the use of department resources, including equipment, skills and time.
  • Create and/or source sound cues and effects for use in Conservatory productions as needed.
  • Provide assistance to Sound Designers and the venues engineer as needed during pre-programming, tech and previews for mainstage productions.
  • Perform duties as sound and video programmer as needed
  • Attend production meetings and speak on behalf of the sound and video departments as needed to best support the process.
  • Provide designers with all pertinent information including audio and video inventory, speaker positions, etc.
  • Generate and maintain all other show paperwork including line set schedules and industry standard paperwork Continually track and update changes on all design information and drawings
  • Research, price and order or rent equipment & expendables for shows and the general inventory within the department. 
  • Assist the PM in managing and recommending maintenance & upkeep of equipment, tools, and facilities as well as purchasing, scheduling and labor to receive and install parts and replacement equipment
  • Manage the upkeep and organization of files on the Company servers.
  • Assist Stage Management on mainstage, Conservatory and Education projects with set-up in the rehearsal studio, including but not limited to rehearsal sound system, and the creation or sourcing of rehearsal sound cues or music
  • Assist the Production Manager with budget estimates, financial projections and staff planning as needed. 
  • Understand and work within the parameters of all Union labor contracts, including: IATSE Stagehands, USA Designers and AEA Stage Managers. 
  • Design and provide other production management duties, and technical support, as assigned, for the Conservatory, Young Conservatory, educational programs and initiatives, rentals and other events under the umbrella of A.C.T. 
  • Indirectly supervise other members of the technical/production team as needed through organizational structure or chain of command.
  • Assist Production Management in the creation and upkeep of tech packages for all A.C.T. venues for both internal use and rental purposes.

 

Qualifications & Qualities:

 

  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, contributing to an inclusive working, and learning environment.
  • This is an on site, in-person position. Must be Bay Area based or willing to move to the Bay Area.
  • A BA/BFA in technical theatre or equivalent professional experience ( 2 years ) in technical theatre with an emphasis Sound or Video design
  • Proficient in theatre drafting and CAD drafting as well as industry standard software required 
  • Knowledge and experience with current computer audio control systems, Qlab, Watchout , D3/Disguis eand other common systems.
  • Knowledge of LED Video wall systems
  • Willingness to work on an irregular schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Experience in managing budgets and expenditures.
  • Excellent oral, writing, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong computer skills a must. Proficiency on PC/ MAC using Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of constituents including visiting directors, designers, artists, administrative staff, technical crews, and students
  • Work in a detail-oriented manner, be resourceful and flexible, and be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Valid Driver’s License and a clean DMV report required
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, ability to reach above head.
  • Effectively problem solve and troubleshoot
  • Face demanding situations with tenacity, diplomacy, and sensitivity under pressure
  • Excellent work ethic and ability to work well in a team.
