Job Title: Controls Engineer
Location: American Eagle Papermills
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Controls Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team. In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain control systems for various industrial applications, ensuring that all automated processes are optimized for efficiency, safety, and reliability. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to implement innovative control solutions, troubleshoot issues, and improve system performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Development: Design, program, and implement control systems for manufacturing, automation, and other industrial processes, using PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, and other control hardware/software.
System Integration: Integrate new control systems into existing equipment and processes, ensuring seamless operation across all systems and functions.
Programming: Develop and maintain PLC and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) programs using industry-standard programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text, and function block diagram.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Diagnose and resolve control system issues, conduct system diagnostics, and perform preventive maintenance to minimize downtime.
Testing & Commissioning: Perform system testing, calibration, and commissioning of control systems to ensure they meet specifications and operational requirements.
Process Optimization: Analyze and optimize existing control systems to improve performance, reduce costs, and increase system reliability and efficiency.
Documentation: Create and maintain accurate technical documentation for control systems, including diagrams, manuals, and operation instructions.
Collaboration: Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, as well as project managers, to ensure successful project delivery.
Compliance & Safety: Ensure control systems comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and safety protocols.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Control Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
Experience: 1-3 years of experience in controls engineering, automation, or related roles. (Preferred)
Proficiency with PLC programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, etc.) and SCADA systems.
Hands-on experience with HMI/SCADA design, motor control, sensors, actuators, and industrial network protocols (e.g., Modbus, EtherNet/IP).
Familiarity with control system design principles, instrumentation, and electrical systems.
Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot control system issues both in the field and through simulation.
- Excellent communication skills for effective teamwork and interaction with clients and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of industrial safety standards, such as NFPA 70E or IEC 61508.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with advanced control strategies (e.g., PID tuning, VFD control).
Knowledge of IT systems and networks, including industrial Ethernet and cybersecurity best practices.
Experience with simulation and modeling tools (MATLAB, Simulink, etc.).
