AET is hiring a Lab Technician for the Wausau, WI

Perform geotechnical laboratory testing in accordance with AET QA Procedures. Observe and evaluate samples and field logs returned from the field for the purpose of refined classification and geologic origin judgments (per AET QA Procedure) prior to word processing and engineering review of boring logs. Develop skills as necessary to complete tasks efficiently and without direct supervision.

  • For assigned projects, observe and evaluate each jar sample returned to the laboratory and judge soil classification and geologic origin per AET QA procedures, which generally follow ASTM : D2488 and D2487. Correct filed logs as needed.
  • Conduct geotechnical lab tests per AET QA procedures, including water content, density, sieve analysis, sieve analysis with hydrometer, Atterberg Limits, unconfined compressive strength, electrical resistivity, and others as assigned.
  • Conduct equipment calibrations per AET QA procedures.
  • Development (where needed) :

Undergo training to reach acceptable level of competency in classification and logging soil samples.

  • Work with current primary soil logging technician.
  • Consult with engineers.
  • Become familiar with ASTM : D248 and D2487.
  • Lab Efficiency / Quality
  • Maintain Geotechnical Lab in clean and safe working order.

  • Maintain Sample Table space by regularly reviewing sample status and storing samples as needed by engineer.
  • Aid Department field activities as needed to cover department overload periods.
  • Possible field logger.

  • Utility clearance activities.
  • Boring locations / elevations.
  • Evaluate assignment complexity and recognize when more difficult judgments or situations are present such that engineering supervision / assistance can be provided as needed.
  • Determine daily work schedule based on project priorities and client / department schedules.
  • Other Areas of Accountability

  • Conduct field, laboratory and office activities in a manner consistent with federal, state, and local regulations, along with AET’s QA and Health and Safety Policies, to promote the safety and protection of employees, clients and the public.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Some positions may require use of personal vehicle for company business.
  • Out of town travel possible.
  • Properly use and maintain company instruments and equipment.
  • Coordinate with other staff with the ultimate goal of increasing efficiency, productivity, and communication.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary to meet departmental or company goals.
  • Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Communication skills sufficient to work effectively with clients and coworkers.
  • Ability to interact successfully with a wide variety of people, work effectively within project teams, resolve issues and problems in a constructive manner, and work independently in the field.
  • Capable of the physical labor required. Ability to occasionally move 50 to 100 pounds.
  • Preferred Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills including ability to communicate at all levels with tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.
  • Previous soil testing / classification experience preferred.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and hands-on attitude.
  • Ability to inspire team to embrace change and impart results-oriented culture to achieve business objectives while holding team accountable.
  • Strong technical, problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgement and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.

    Base compensation is expected to be in the range of $20.29 and $25.38 per hour based on skill set and experience. AET offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health benefits, insurance, Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), long term savings, paid time off, and professional development opportunities. The selected candidate must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.

    Work Environment

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    This job primarily operates in a field environment in outdoor conditions on construction sites with uneven ground and adverse weather conditions. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands or finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 50-100 pounds. The employee will occasionally push or pull equipment weighing up to 200 pounds. The employee is required to frequently work outside.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
