Job Summary

Direct and oversee staff activities in accordance with the company’s plan. Assist in developing department technical capability and facilitating growth. Assist in the management of department financials. Responsible for the daily supervision of assigned department staff, with the guidance from the Department or Division Manager.

  • Secure, direct, schedule, and perform services in areas of expertise, including (as assigned) :

Preparing proposals.

  • Completing higher-complexity technical work.
  • Writing reports.
  • Reviewing reports.
  • Client management.
  • Billing and administrative functions.
  • Staff Supervision :
  • Assign / schedule projects.

  • Review / approve employee timesheets, expenses, per diem, and other documentation.
  • Monitor and train staff as needed to maintain project quality / service and limit risk.
  • Prepare and perform staff performance reviews.
  • Assist in conducting performance improvement plans, as needed.
  • Assist employees in developing career paths and goals.
  • Assist in settling staff conflicts, with guidance from HR or Department / Division Manager.
  • Coach and mentor employees as needed.
  • Work proactively to develop and maintain a positive working environment within the department.
  • Lead regular department meetings, as needed.
  • Assist in evaluating and interviewing job applicants for posted positions.
  • Assist in Managing Department Financials :
  • Monitor financial performance according to budget.

  • Maintain target profitability and staff productivity rates.
  • Assist in maintaining prevailing wage requirements, as needed.
  • Assist in monitoring department WIP and aged accounts.
  • Other Areas of Accountability

  • Conduct field, laboratory and office activities in a manner consistent with federal, state, and local regulations, along with AET’s QA and Health and Safety Policies, to promote the safety and protection of employees, clients and the public.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Some positions may require use of personal vehicle for company business. Maintain compliance with DOT regulations if required for position. Maintain appropriate physicals if required for position.
  • Occasional travel required within regional area and out of town.
  • Participate in at least one professional or trade organization.
  • Properly use and maintain company instruments and equipment.
  • Improve and maintain the quality of service and work product.
  • Coordinate with other AET offices, departments, and staff with the ultimate goal of increasing efficiency, productivity and communication.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary to meet departmental or company goals.
  • Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelors or advanced degree in Civil Engineering, Geology or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of related experience or, in lieu of degree, 5 years related experience.
  • 0-2 years of experience managing direct reports.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A fully competent manager in all conventional aspects. Independently performs most assignments.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to develop the department’s workplace culture, address employee concerns, and support employees’ career development.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations, standards, codes, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and manage department financial performance according to assigned metrics.
  • Ability to develop and implement solutions to a wide range of problems.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to present ideas to large groups in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, work effectively within project teams, resolve issues and problems in a constructive manner, and work independently in the field.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work as well as direct and monitor the work of other professionals.
  • Pay Transparency

    Base compensation is expected to be in the range of $61,800 and $77,300 per year based on skill set and experience. AET offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health benefits, insurance, Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), long term savings, paid time off, and professional development opportunities. The selected candidate must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.

    Work Environment

    This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. This position also may require field work in outdoor conditions on construction sites with uneven ground and adverse weather conditions. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands or finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 50-100 pounds. The employee will occasionally push or pull equipment weighing up to 200 pounds. The employee is required to frequently work outside.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
