Summary Of Principal Responsibilities
This position is designed to engage as the lead organizer on issues related to the movement to Stop Cop City with the Atlanta Economic Justice Program (ATLEJ).
ATLEJ is looking to build a larger above ground base around the stop cop city movement which is a multi-issue movement that encompasses immigrant rights, environmental justice, militarization, justice in Palestine, criminal justice reform, and housing justice. Connecting these threads and creating a pipeline for community members into the already existing work around these issues will build a more resilient community in a time of increased political repression.

Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred but not mandatory.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of this position include the following:
- Work with communities, organizations, and within coalition spaces in Atlanta to develop organizing campaigns directly in relation to the movement to Stop Cop City and its related issues.
- Work to building and mobilizing a robust, politically engaged base in Atlanta. Leverage the momentum of the Stop Cop City movement, channeling its energy to foster community power and a collective vision for a just, safe, and thriving Atlanta.
- Ladder of Engagement: Develop a pathway for involvement, from initial engagement to core leadership roles.
- Political Education and Skill-Building: Host regular training sessions focused on community organizing, advocacy, and direct action techniques.
- Consistent Weekly Meetings and Events: Hold regular gatherings to sustain momentum, build relationships, and foster accountability to the work.
- Dynamic, Creative Actions: Use direct action to shape public narratives, draw in new members, and build visibility.
- Above-Ground Organizing Space: Maintain a community hub as a visible, accessible entry point for new and ongoing participants.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred but not mandatory.
Experience
- At least 2 - 3 years of direct organizing experience, developing the leadership of working class and people of color.
- At least 1 year direct organizing on policing and criminal justice issues.
- Experience creating public educational materials for working class audiences.
- Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
- Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations, of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
- Access to a car and the ability to travel to different parts of the state (all mileage reimbursed).
- Self-motivated and able to work independently and with a team.
