Job Description
The Manager of Balance of Plant Systems Engineering is accountable for the performance of electrical power systems, controls, and balance of plant work scopes for hydro projects and meeting the budgeted costs for these systems. The equipment and services solicited include generators (new or rewound), governor and controls upgrades, inlet valve upgrades, thrust bearing conversion to High-Pressure Lift design, and the addition of instrumentation (RTDs, oil level detection, shear pin failure detection system) as specified.
This role is also accountable for the commissioning and testing of hydropower plant equipment. They have approval authority for design drawings and documentation.
Essential Functions Performed by the Position

- Accountable for the integration and performance of “balance of plant” systems for the hydro project, including electrical power systems and controls
- Responsible for the design and manufacture of electrical systems and commissioning/testing of hydro turbine-generator installations.
- Includes integration of generator, excitation, switchgear, controls, and auxiliary electrical components.
- Support AH proposal effort by soliciting firm quotes for all specification requirements that are outside of the turbine scope of supply
- Develop winning technical strategies for company proposals to include electrical design concepts and subcontractor technical strategies
- Develop cost-effective equipment layouts and achieve budgeted costs
- Write technical documents to facilitate the purchase of all quoted hardware and services
- Supervise and provide guidance to the Systems Engineering department; Train and provide technical supervision to Systems Engineers
- Commission the hydro installation to include troubleshooting and after-market testing
- Develop, verify, and maintain systems engineering computer software and engineering standards for product design and manufacture
- Represent the company at trade shows and on professional society committees and meetings; Preparation of technical papers and presentations at major conferences
- Final approval of design layouts, drawings, documents, and analysis related to electrical systems
- Review product discrepancies versus design requirements and prescribe disposition
- Satisfy ISO Quality Standards as it relates to these engineering tasks
- Development of electrical analysis tools and training of Systems Engineers on the use of those tools
- Final acceptance of electrical systems and work performed by sub-suppliers
- Approval of field and shop non-conformances and disposition of non-conformances

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering Required
- Supervisory experience
- 10 years hydro turbine engineering experience
Licenses or Certifications Required
- Professional Engineering License or Advanced Degree Preferred
