SUMMARY:

AIP is looking for a Photo Project Assistant Intern to join our Niels Bohr Library & Archives (NBLA) Team.

The Photo Project Assistant Intern will work a total of 190 hours (approx. 12-15 hours per week for 15 weeks) with NBLA staff to complete the appraisal, selection, and metadata extraction for a large collection of born-digital photographs in preparation for their ingest into the NBLA online repository. Participation in this project will help NBLA staff refine and standardize workflows for handling bulk donations of digital photographs.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Apply selection criteria to aid in photograph selection.
  • Download photographs from an online photo album; extracting and copying relevant metadata to enter into a structured spreadsheet.
  • Occasionally engage in outreach activities to promote the project in NBLA communication channels and social media.
  • Testing draft workflows for appraisal and selection of digital photographs.
  • Applying pre-defined selection criteria to a subset of larger collection of digital photographs.
  • Extracting metadata from SmugMug, an online photo sharing platform.
  • Entering metadata into a shared spreadsheet, including file name, folder structure, and the names of the people identified.
  • Downloading image files from SmugMug.
  • Providing valuable feedback on the draft workflows and processes.


WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and/or previous relevant archival experience.
  • Students currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Archival Studies or relevant field preferred.
  • Experience with photograph collections, familiarity with cataloging and metadata standards such as MARC, DACS, EAD, Dublin Core, and LCSH preferred.
  • Proofreading and research skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail in photo editing, captioning, and organization.

COMPENSATION: $18 per hour.

The team works in a flexible, hybrid schedule and reports to our offices in College Park, Maryland and Washington, DC, as needed. Employees are required to reside in the DC Metro regions of Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC.
