What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Editor position at American Maritime Officers?
American Maritime Officers, a national union representing U.S. Merchant Marine officers, is seeking a full-time assistant editor to work in the union's Communications Department. Candidates will need to be proficient with print production layout and design using InDesign and Acrobat. Other requirements include education in and experience with news writing, proficiency with image rendering for print and online publication using Photoshop, and proficiency using an SLR or mirrorless camera and multiple lenses. Candidates will need to need to be comfortable working in an industrial environment, boarding and being onboard vessels of all sizes, and adhering to safety requirements provided by vessel officers. Candidates will need to be local to Broward County to work at the union's main office in Dania Beach, Fla. a few miles south of Ft. Lauderdale. Over time, hybrid work arranged with the communications staff will be acceptable based on local scheduling and availability for assignments. Some travel for job assignments will be required with travel expenses paid by the union.
Education:
Candidates should hold a four-year degree including a major or minor in print journalism and/or public relations with practical training in print production layout design and news writing. A two-year degree combined with equivalent work experience in these areas will also be considered.
Work Experience:
Candidates should have one to five years of professional experience, either in news or public relations. Work experience should include print production design and design/production of online content - news and/or promotional pieces. Please provide writing clips and a portfolio of design work.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite anchors, particularly InDesign, Acrobat and Photoshop, will be essential, as will experience processing files for press publication with Acrobat. Some exposure to manipulating vector graphics using Illustrator would be valuable.
Experience and understanding of image rendering at a production level will be essential. Comfort with using web-based third-party platforms for various purposes (archival, file sharing, email distribution, etc.) will be essential. Some professional exposure to use of social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) would be valuable.
