What are the responsibilities and job description for the Digital Projects Assistant position at American Philatelic Research Library?
Under the supervision of the American Philatelic Research Library’s Digital Librarian, the Digital Projects Assistant will digitize philatelic exhibits, journals from the library’s collection, postal artifacts, and additional items on projects to be determined.
The Digital Projects Assistant’s primary tasks will include:
· Digitization of items using the library’s scanning and photographic equipment.
· Handling rare and fragile materials- including preparing them for shipping when necessary.
· Entering and assigning metadata to digital items.
· Uploading items and metadata to the digital library via content management software.
· Performing quality control on digitized items.
· Assisting Patrons regarding the digital library and/or digitized items (when applicable).
· Assisting with additional digitization efforts, digital content needs, and projects within the American Philatelic Society and American Philatelic Research Library.
· Assisting with improving and developing the Robert A. Mason Digital Library.
Candidates must have excellent computer skills, attention to detail, creative flexibility, and the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision. Candidates will receive all necessary on-site training and support regarding library digitization processes, and software and scanning equipment. Familiarity with CONTENTdm library management software, image processing software such as Adobe Photoshop, and data management software such as Microsoft Excel is a plus but not a requirement. Prior knowledge of or experience in a library or archives environment is also preferred but not required.
The Assistant will be a part-time employee of the American Philatelic Society, located in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, and compensation will be $20 per hour. The position will comprise 20 hours of work per week starting in February 2025, possibly with more time as needed. The weekly schedule is flexible but must fall within the APRL’s operating hours (8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday).
The American Philatelic Research Library (www.stamplibrary.org ) holds more than 85,000 volumes and is the largest public library in the world dedicated to stamp collecting and postal history. It is located in the newly-renovated space in an historic match factory building in the Victorian town of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, just 10 miles from Penn State’s University Park campus and serves philatelic researchers from all over the world.
