Elementary School Substitute Job Description
We are looking for reliable and flexible Substitute Teachers to join our team. Substitutes are required to be available at least 4 days each month during the school year. While advance notice is provided when possible, substitutes may be called on short notice for same-day needs.
Responsibilities:
- Teach reading, math, and spelling groups using Direct Instruction programs.
- Supervise students during lunch, recess, and transitions to and from Art, PE, and other classes.
- Follow teacher plans and maintain American Prep classroom management standards.
- Prepare necessary materials, including scripts and copies, when called in advance.
- Report any issues to the homeroom teacher or appropriate staff.
- Attend Direct Instruction training sessions.
- Work closely with staff to ensure students are safe and engaged.
- Keep records and data organized in Data Binders.
- Participate in meetings, when applicable.
Qualifications:
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Flexibility to handle same-day substitute requests.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff and maintain a positive learning environment.
- Must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- Organization: Substitute teachers must be prepared to respond quickly to calls or emails, either immediately (for same-day requests) or within 4 hours (for advance requests). Good organizational skills are essential for balancing home, family, and work responsibilities.
- Work Ethic: Substitutes are required to work at least 4 days per month throughout the school year. Hours may vary, so a strong work ethic and commitment to fulfilling this responsibility are key.
- Initiative: Substitutes must be proactive, asking questions when needed, and stepping up to ensure quality instruction in the absence of regular teachers.
- Positive Attitude: A positive attitude, sense of humor, and can-do spirit, even in stressful situations, are crucial for success.
- Flexibility: Substitutes must be flexible and willing to step in at the last minute. They should be comfortable traveling between campuses and ensuring excellent instruction continues.
- Teachable: Substitutes must be open to feedback from Administration and work collaboratively with other staff members to support student success.
