Secondary Learning Mentor Job Description
Job Summary:
Under the direction and supervision of the Secondary Admin, General Ed Teacher and Special Education teacher, you will be responsible for the supervision and academic support of students with mild to moderate disabilities.
Successful candidates must meet highly qualified status in one of three ways:
• Earned an Associate Degree; or
• Earned 48 college credit hours; or
• Successfully completing a basic academic skills (ParaPro) exam within the first week of hire.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The position includes but is not limited to the following list of representative duties:
- Provides supervision and instruction to student(s) with special needs.
- Support students with special needs in accessing instruction provided by General Education and Special Education teachers.
- Provides consistent communication to the Secondary Admin, General Ed Teacher and Special Education Teacher, regarding students.
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the classroom teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
- Communicates with teachers and other district personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
- Implements under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans (e.g., reading, math, language comprehension, writing, computer, etc.) for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
- Provides guidance and support to students in a positive manner.
- Maintains classroom equipment and work area for the purpose of ensuring availability of a safe learning environment and/or meeting mandated requirements.
- Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, assemblies, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Promotes good study habits and student independence for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes.
- Provides, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g., self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills, etc.) for the purpose of implementing goals for remediation of student deficiencies and ensuring student’s success.
- Documents student’s daily activities (e.g., behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times, etc.) for the purpose of completing daily logs and student’s hourly activities.
- Uphold the Character Development characteristics taught on a monthly basis
- Willingness to work at school and other public settings as required.
Skills:
- Energetic, enthusiastic and committed to student success
- No license required
- Able to work well in a teamwork environment, including participation in a coaching model for teaching
- Able to demonstrate good classroom management skills
- Must work well under pressure and have the ability to diffuse highly emotional situations
- Experience in Special Education is desired but not required
