Position Summary
The Director / Senior Director of Liability and Counsel at APCIA assists in leading the industry's proactive thought leadership strategies and tactics on legal defense and reform. They serve as highly visible experts before policymakers, the media, and industry audiences on the association’s top priority focus. They also work with member companies and colleagues to develop research and policy on legal defense and reform issues.
Help build coalitions and support message testing, public and policymaker education, and state and federal advocacy. Analyze, draft, and coordinate legislative, regulatory, and judicial reform proposals, including providing support analysis, talking points, and testimony. Legal defense and reform topics include tort trends, state ‘bad faith’ rules, statute of limitations / revivers, class action and jury verdict trends, litigation financing, attorney involvement and advertising, social inflation, and judicial elections.
Job Description
- Utilizes knowledge of the U.S. Judicial system and current legal liability environment to develop longer term strategy and tactics in order to impact change and reach an identified outcome.
- Conducts and oversees qualitative and quantitative research with members and other stakeholders to support identified reform. Conduct and oversee research, evaluate the outcomes and make recommendations
- Identifies and prioritizes emerging public policy issues that will impact the liability industry and may require the development of new policy positions or a response by the association.
- Functions as a lead technical resource to APCIA staff and member companies on liability related matters. Evaluates legislation for its impact on the industry and members, drafts initial wording and / or modifies legislation as necessary to support APCIA public policy and member issues.
- Drafts written testimony, bulletins, policy support documents, meeting agendas and minutes related to commercial liability insurance issues.
- Engages with other divisions to influence public policy debates by providing data, research and strategic frameworks.
- Represents APCIA in participating in joint industry research projects or other industry efforts including NAMIC, RAA, DRI, ALI, CAS and state / federal coalitions.
- Develops strong member relations in order to understand their issues and priorities.
- Develops and maintains external relationships in order to keep informed of emerging issues and to engage external constituencies.
