The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.
ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. SCOPE OF DUTIES
The Assistant Principal will exercise leadership, supervision, and administrative skills to promote academic, social and emotional development of each student.
PRIMARY DUTIES
The Assistant Principal will possess and effectively articulate:
- Strong leadership, management and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum and assessment that supports student learning for deaf and/or hard of hearing students
- Provides leadership for and with teachers in the improvement of student outcomes
- Ability to use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate
- Current data and researched-based focus on student achievement
- Knowledge of Deaf Education and its implications for instruction
- Analyze student academic and behavioral data for program improvement
- Supervises and evaluates professional staff as assigned by the principal
- Strong technology skills
- A commitment to the achievement of all students
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and parents to improve student performance
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing with a variety of constituents
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- The ability to ensure high standards for student achievement grounded in twenty-first century skills
- Experience developing professional learning including collaborative staff learning (COPs)
- Effective interpersonal and leadership skills; experience facilitating communications between divergent groups and in group decision-making
- Evidence of building positive interdepartmental relationships and parent collaboration
- Demonstrated success in the development, evaluation and implementation of curriculum and instruction
- Working knowledge of and training in the use of the Connecticut’s Educator Evaluation and Support Plan
- Experience in designing interventions for struggling students
- Evidence of using data to inform instructional structures and processes
- Excellent communication skills including the effective utilization of technology and information management tools
- Experience working with students with multiple disabilities in addition to deafness; Priority will be given to candidates with experience in emotional disability and/or autism
- Experience in developing and managing program budgets
- Willingness to work collaboratively with other departmental administrators and instructional coordinators
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Candidates must possess CT Intermediate Administrator and Supervisor Certification (092) or ability to secure;
- Certification in Deaf Education (057) or Special Education (165) or Related Services (i.e. 070)
- Will have a proven track record of success as a school administrator; at least 3-5 years of successful professional and/or administrative experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively using American Sign Language (ASL); ASLPI rated preferred
