What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maritime Compliance Officer position at American Seafood?
Duties and Responsibilities
- Regulatory Compliance Management : Ensure the company complies with federal, state, local, and tribal regulations relating to our vessel and fishing operations, including but not limited to fishing licenses, permits, vessel registration, fishing operations, and environmental standards.
- Tracking and Reporting : Continuously assess the company’s operations to ensure compliance with relevant laws and work with company operations to ensure timely, complete, and accurate reporting as required by regulatory bodies and internal controls.
- Keep Current : Stay abreast of current laws, rules, and regulations to ensure ongoing compliance. Modify internal processes and reporting to maintain compliance.
- Training and Awareness : Work closely with HR to ensure vessel crew and other employees receive proper training on relevant compliance areas. Engage directly with vessel crew and other employees to maintain open communication related to compliance.
- Audit and Risk Management : Lead internal and external audits to assess compliance levels. Identify potential risks in maritime operations and recommend solutions to mitigate risks.
- Liaise with Regulatory Authorities : Serve as primary point of contact between the company and relevant regulatory bodies. Work to ensure appropriate lines of communication and rapport with regulatory agents and representatives.
- Documentation : Maintain impeccable written compliance records. Work closely with legal department to maintain complete, accurate, and timely records.
- Vessel Resource : Serve as a cross-functional resource on company documentation, compliance, process management. Assist on system implementation as necessary.
- Response : Work closely with legal department to appropriately respond to compliance related enforcement actions.
- Miscellaneous : Assist legal and operations departments on other projects and priorities as necessary.

Work Schedule
Anticipated hours are : Monday – Friday 8 : 00 am - 5 : 00 pm
Seattle, WA, based position with occasional travel to Bellingham and / or Alaska to attend to vessels in person.
Overtime and irregular hours are occasionally required depending on vessel operations and schedules.
Position requires in-person attendance.
Work will take place primarily in an office setting and occasionally and as needed at vessel locations.
