Sidewalk Maintenance Specialist - Job Description
General Overview - The American Sidewalk Management Sidewalk Maintenance Specialist is responsible for quality sidewalk trip hazard removal in alignment with the company’s Core Focus of targeted liability reduction through trip hazard elimination. This is done by utilizing the Company’s proprietary concrete grinding and cutting equipment and adhering to the company’s core values of:

The Sidewalk Maintenance Specialist is a critical part of a small team. Your unique role allows you the opportunity to set your own schedule, work on your own outdoors, and operate as your own entrepreneurial endeavor with one employee reporting to you. A successful Sidewalk Maintenance Technician operates independently for the vast majority of the time.
Specific Expectations in this role - To provide full sidewalk maintenance including survey, trip hazard removal, and data submission, for assigned neighborhoods within client cities as assigned. Additionally, the Specialist will be responsible for the maintenance of all his or her equipment, as well as the work quality of the Sidewalk Maintenance Laborer who will report to them:
Trip Hazard Removal Production
- The Sidewalk Maintenance Specialist and Laborer will repair all trip hazards in the mapped are to which they have been assigned by grinding with their skid-steer and, if required, cutting/polishing with the hand-held equipment. Trip hazard removal work is successful if -
- The quality of finished trip hazard removal – slope, appearance, cleanliness – meets company standards
- Accurate location details i.e. address, street name, etc have been recorded.
- Accurate length and height measurements have been recorded
- Production volumes, i.e. number of hazards removed per day, meet company goals
- Audits of all these measurables will be regularly conducted by the Field Supervisor
- Equipment Maintenance
- Professional appearance and reliable operation are a requirement for all Company equipment. The Specialist will be responsible for proper care and pro-active maintenance of company equipment. Proper maintenance, by adhering to manufacturer recommended schedules, and by following your own best judgement, accomplishes the following:
- Ensures equipment reliability
- Maintains a professional appearance
- Makes hitting production goals possible
- Equipment maintenance will be regularly inspected by the Field Supervisor
- Operational Support
- The Specialist will report to the Field Supervisor who will provide on-call support for operational break-downs in order to minimize downtime. This support will include:
- Remote troubleshooting and repair advice
- On-site inspections and mechanical assistance
- Research and direction for additional support resources i.e. hose repair locations, parts suppliers and availability, etc.
- Consumable parts rebuilding such as vacuum blowers, wear strip fabrication, side shift stops, etc. including the shipping of those parts.
Additional Job Requirements
Physical
- Ability to stand, walk, crouch, lift, and bend for at least 8 hours each day, 5 days per week
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
Psychological
- Ability to balance the competing demands of achieving production goals while proactively maintaining the machine
- Anticipate spare parts needs and communicate with Director of Operations
- Communicate the consumption of spare parts to the Director of Operations so replacements can be supplied
- Inspect and anticipate emergent mechanical issues in order to fix them before they cause failures
- Ability to perform unplanned repairs under-pressure due to performance-based compensation
- Understanding that unplanned break-downs are a part of the job and should be anticipated
- Ability to be self-sufficient in the troubleshooting and repair of equipment
- Ability to work with a flexible schedule to compensate for unanticipated downtime
Reporting Structure - The Sidewalk Maintenance Specialist reports directly to the Field Supervisor.
Compensation – Pay for the Sidewalk Maintenance Specialist is performance based. This allows the right candidate to determine his or her own compensation based on schedule, efficiency, maintenance management, innovative practices, and work hours. Typically, annual compensation ranges from $60,000 to $85,000 per year. Additionally, American Sidewalk Management recognizes performance in the form of bonus compensation for reaching goals. Bonus details included separately. Finally, the role includes the use of a company truck for all work-related transportation as well as grinding rig towing and operation.
Time Commitment – 40 hours per week unless linear footage and maintenance goals are met in less time. The potential for overnight travel of 50% or more exists.
