The mission of ASSH is to advance the science and practice of hand and upper extremity surgery through education, research, and advocacy on behalf of patients and practitioners. ASSH provides educational opportunities for surgeons in the form of webinars, online resources, courses/meetings, textbooks, practice examinations, medical journals, and communities. ASSH also fosters basic science, clinical, and outcomes research grants, and provides hand surgery to underserved communities around the world.

ASSH seeks to expand our use of the latest analytics tools and processes to advance those efforts. To help us with this goal, we’re searching for an experienced data analyst to join our team.
The Data Analyst plays a key role in driving organizational growth through data-driven insights. This individual analyzes complex datasets, identifies trends, and delivers actionable reports that inform strategic decisions. The role collaborates closely with stakeholders to understand their analytics needs and evaluates systems for efficiency, ensuring data accuracy and consistency. With the right candidate, this individual may contribute to special projects, supporting critical initiatives and organizational priorities. This role requires strong analytical skills, a proactive mindset, and the ability to transform data into meaningful results that drive performance and innovation.
Responsibilities
- Identify trends and opportunities for growth through analysis of complex datasets
- Create accessible reports based on data mining, analysis, and visualization
- Evaluate internal systems for efficiency, problems, and inaccuracies, and develop and maintain protocols for handling, processing, and cleaning data
- Work closely with stakeholders to understand and maintain focus on their analytics needs, including critical metrics and KPIs, and deliver actionable insights to relevant decision-makers
- Proactively analyze data to answer key questions, with an eye on what drives performance, and investigate and communicate which areas need improvement in efficiency and productivity
- Define and implement data acquisition and integration logic, working with IT to select an appropriate combination of methods and tools.
- Review database structure and content and, working with Marketing/Communications and IT, recommend additions, deletions, and changes by acquiring data from primary and secondary sources.
Education and Experience
- 3 years of experience mining data as a data analyst
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, computer science, economics, or statistics
- Technical writing experience in relevant areas, including queries, reports, and presentations
- Experience setting up and using a BI tool such as Tableau, Power BI, or other tools
- Experience with database and model design and segmentation techniques
- Strong programming experience with frameworks, including XML/JSON, JavaScript, and ETL
- Experience with predictive analytics to drive marketing engagement and implementing AI
- Practical experience in statistical analysis through the use of statistical packages, including Excel, SPSS, and SAS
Skills and Competencies
- Proven analytics skills, including mining, evaluation, and visualization
- Strong SQL or Excel skills, with aptitude for learning other analytics tools
- Proven success in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
Location & Work Environment
- Chicago, IL as part of a hybrid work environment with 2 days in the office per week
Travel Requirements
- Occasional travel may be required for training sessions, meetings, other events, or conferences. Travel is typically within the U.S. and is estimated to be up to 5% per year, but travel may also be outside the U.S.
Starting Salary
- $70,000
