JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under direction and supervision, performs specialized professional nursing duties in assisting surgeons in the operating room; acts as scrub or sterile nurse; sets up operating room according to type of operation; assists surgeon during operative procedures; transfers patient from operating room to recovery room; and performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for: following and carrying out established center and operating room procedures; achieving some economies and/or preventing losses, through the proper handling and use of instruments, supplies and equipment; making regular contacts with surgeons, physicians, nurses and subordinate personnel in carrying out specialized duties. Nature of work requires sustained physical effort, including considerable standing and walking; considerable adeptness in the use of fingers and hands when assisting surgeon; exposure to some accident and injury hazards with intermittent exposure to several disagreeable elements inherent in operating room procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Uses established techniques in preparing for and assisting with surgical procedures; provides and sets up necessary instruments, supplies and equipment for different types of operations, according to established routines and instructions of the surgeon.
· Oversee daily operations of two operating rooms and two procedure rooms to ensure smooth, efficient surgical procedures and patient flow.
· Manage physician surgical orders and ensure timely, accurate preparation for cases, coordinating with surgical teams to meet case requirements.
· Supervise and manage OR staff schedules and assignments, ensuring optimal staffing levels based on case volume, skill set, and patient needs.
· Collaborate with OR coordinator to ensure appropriate surgical representative presence and materials for all scheduled procedures.
· Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards, implementing and maintaining protocols to meet all healthcare regulations and accreditation standards.
· Monitor surgical team performance and provide ongoing support, training, and evaluations to foster continuous professional development and enhance patient care.
· Facilitate communication between surgeons, anesthesia providers, and nursing staff to ensure all aspects of patient care are coordinated effectively throughout the surgical process.
· Assist in budgeting and resource allocation to ensure proper equipment, supplies, and staffing are available while optimizing financial resources.
· Implement quality improvement initiatives to monitor and improve surgical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and operational efficiency.
· As scrub or sterile nurse, sets up operating room with instruments as specifically required for type of operation to be performed; arranges instruments and other articles in specified order on portable table immediately accessible to, the surgeon; anticipates surgeon’s needs for instruments, sponges, sutures, suction tubes and other items and hands them to surgeon in most expeditious manner; maintains aseptic field.
· Observes patient during surgical procedure to detect possible complications and/or breaks in sterile technique; furnishes emergency equipment and supplies to prevent fatality.
· Manages contaminated instruments and supplies during operation procedures to prevent spread of infection,
· As circulating nurse, places patient in prescribed position to assure access to operative field; adjusts operating table and accessory equipment as may be required; prepares operative area and drapes patient or assists surgeon with draping,
· Observes progress of surgery; provides additional instruments, supplies or other items as needed; provides and regulates such fluids as blood, plasma, saline and glucose solutions, cardiac and respiratory stimulants to prevent fatalities during operation,
· After operation, may apply or assist in applying dressings, and transferring patient, from operating room to recovery room.
· Cleans or directs cleaning and sterilization of contaminated instruments, equipment and supplies; re-sterilizes unused supplies; cares for and stores delicate surgical instruments; cleans or assists in cleaning operating room areas and caring for and disposing of infectious and soiled linen after conclusion of each Operation
· Maintains nursing guidelines by writing and/or updating policy and procedures
· Manages, orients, trains, and develops nursing staff for Operating Room.
· Maintains clean and safe work environments
· Manages Inventory control for the Operating Room.
· Manages specific equipment and inventory needs for onboarding of new doctors and/or new procedures.
· Oversee Instrumentation and Sterilization Process of equipment and trains staff on the same.
· Works closely with the Nursing Manager on staffing, Infection Control, Policies and Procedures and acts as a Nurse Manager in an absence of one on site.
SUMMARY:
- Develop and implement OR staff schedules to ensure optimal staffing based on the complexity of cases, ensuring adequate coverage for all shifts and maintaining a balance between operational efficiency and staff well-being.
- Collaborate with facility leadership (executive team, medical director, etc.) to identify and advance new opportunities for the surgical center, including expanding services, adopting new technologies, and improving patient care protocols.
- Facilitate ongoing professional development by organizing and promoting continuous education and specialized training sessions for OR staff, ensuring they remain up-to-date with the latest surgical techniques, technologies, and safety protocols.
- Evaluate and improve operational efficiency by conducting regular assessments of the OR workflow, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing strategies to reduce turnaround times and improve the patient experience.
- Implement a staff performance management system, including conducting regular performance reviews, providing constructive feedback, and setting development goals to enhance staff retention and growth.
- Ensure cross-departmental collaboration, working closely with anesthesia providers, surgical teams, and administrative staff to improve patient flow and communication between departments.
- Drive initiatives for patient safety and quality assurance, implementing new strategies and protocols for preventing surgical errors, reducing infection rates, and optimizing recovery times.
- Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to surgical outcomes, patient satisfaction, staff productivity, and operational cost efficiency to ensure goals are being met and to inform leadership decisions.
- Foster a supportive work environment through team-building activities, addressing conflicts promptly, and promoting a positive culture of cooperation and professional respect within the operating room.
- Lead recruitment and onboarding efforts for new staff, including reviewing resumes, conducting interviews, and ensuring proper training and mentorship for new OR nurses and other staff members.
- Stay current with industry trends in surgical practices, technology, and regulations by attending conferences, workshops, and reviewing professional literature to ensure the surgical center remains competitive and compliant.
- Act as a liaison between staff and upper management, communicating concerns, suggestions, and feedback from OR staff to leadership, ensuring that staff voices are heard and acted upon.
- Promote patient-centered care by implementing policies and initiatives that ensure the comfort, safety, and satisfaction of patients throughout their surgical journey, from pre-op to post-op.
SKILLS & TRAINING:
Requires thorough technical and working knowledge of the various steps involved in different types of’ operations in order to anticipate surgeons, needs; correct methods of handling instruments and supplies; surgical instruments used in various surgical procedures, and the related proper setting up of the operating room; the importance of maintaining an aseptic field. Requires specialized skill and ability and mental and visual concentration when assisting surgeon during operative procedure.
- Requires possession of a valid certificate as a registered nurse issued by the state board of nursing examiners.
Please note, the pay for an OR Manager is based on variety of factors such as experience, education and certification, facility size and complexity, location, staffing and team size, performance, workload and case volume, work schedule, requirements, etc.
