Summary : This position is responsible for installation, configuration, management, and troubleshooting of the University’s wired and wireless network infrastructure. Duties include maintaining and supporting routers, switches, controllers, access points, wireless voice electronics (Distributed Antenna Systems), and associated cabling to ensure the network operates effectively and meets the technological needs of the university. This position requires technical expertise, effective problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. The individual in this position is expected to work with minimal supervision, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Essential Functions 1.) Network Configuration and Installation

Configure and install university-owned network equipment, including routers, switches, wireless network controllers, wireless access points, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units, Power Distribution Units (PDUs), in-building Distributed Antenna System (DAS) components, and campus wireless voice infrastructure electronics.

Installs and configures multiple Access Points (AP) and other electronic components for wireless connections or modifications.

Develops and maintains network documentation, including diagrams, configurations and procedures to support training and troubleshooting efforts.

2.) Network Maintenance, Monitoring, and Documentation

Configures network management systems for monitoring purposes.

Monitors, maintains, and troubleshoots university-owned network equipment including LAN & WLAN uptime and traffic.

Helps plan network gear upgrades to address evolving campus demands

3.) User Support and Problem Resolution

Provides high-level technical support to users by diagnosing and resolving hardware and software issues related to network connectivity and performance.

Develops and maintains network documentation, including diagrams, configurations and procedures to support training and troubleshooting efforts.

4.) Cabling and Fiber Management

Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots fiber-optic and twisted pair cabling for wired and wireless network infrastructure.

Plans and installs efficient cabling with network switches within buildings.

Maintains the campus fiber backbone, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work :

Full-Time.

35 hours per week.

Monday through Friday, with a one-hour lunch break.

2 days per week on campus and 3 days per week remote.

This position requires flexibility in the employee’s work schedule, as frequent after-hours and weekend support are required.

Candidate must be willing to experience interrupted nights and weekends.

This position requires participation in the on-call network rotation, which starts on Friday after work and lasts for a week.

This person will be on call 24 hours a day for the 7-day period. The on-call rotation is shared by members of the Network Engineering team.

When on-call, the person(s) must work during unplanned closures or emergencies to address emergency IT issues.

Team members not on-call must be reasonably available outside of normal working hours and days.

OIT staff are prohibited from taking non-emergency leave during the three-week period at the start of each semester, this includes the week before the start of the Fall and Spring term and the first two weeks of classes for the Fall and Spring term.

Requests for support peak during these times and system availability is also critical, which requires all staff members to be working during these times.

Salary Range :

102,195-$107,000 annually.

Required Education and Experience :

Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

1-3 years of relevant experience.

Clear and concise communication, especially when explaining technical concepts to non-technical customers.

Practical experience diagnosing and resolving issues with computer hardware and software applications.

Understanding of networking protocols, such as TCP / IP, DNS, DHCP, and VLANs.

Preferred Education and Experience :

2-4 years of relevant experience.

Hands-on experience configuring and maintaining Cisco routers and switches, wireless network equipment and access points preferred.

A network or wireless certification, such as CCNA, CWNP, etc.) is preferred. However, relevant on-the-job training and additional years of practical experience may be considered in place of certifications.

Travel Required :

Must be able to travel between AU on- and off-campus buildings.

Employees in staff positions at American University must deliver their services to the university from either the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia, or perform work on-site at the university.
