Summary / Objective : The Department of Public Administration and Policy in the School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University is seeking applications for a predoctoral fellow to conduct rigorous and timely policy research and analyses to support the work of a new Center led by Professors Jordan Matsudaira at SPA and Stephanie Cellini at George Washington University.The Postsecondary Equity & Economics Research (PEER) Center conducts rigorous research to promote evidence-based policymaking and more equitable outcomes in higher education and workforce training, and trains higher education researchers to more effectively engage with and impact state and federal policy. This predoctoral fellowship is an opportunity to engage in rigorous research related to postsecondary education costs, affordability, value, student success for individuals interested in pursuing graduate school in economics or public policy with interests in higher education and workforce training.This is a staff position with an initial term of 12 months, which may be extended for up to an additional year conditional on performance and available funding. Essential Functions : Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.Assembling, Cleaning, and Analyzing Data : Collaborates directly with experienced researchers and professors to gain familiarity and comfort with developing and conducting empirical analyses and build data and research skills. They will develop these research skills by :
Collecting, entering, cleaning, and managing data; and conducting basic analyses. May require learning new methods, techniques, and software.
Recognizing and identifying issues with data collection, entry, management, and analysis and appropriately communicating with project supervisors.
Executing the secure transmission and management of data.
Conducting Research :
Obtaining, synthesizing, and summarizing large amounts of information.
Contributing to the creation of instruments, publications, materials, and grant deliverables.
Collaborating in conducting higher education research and use research and data in writing issue briefs and other publications.
Policy :
Maintaining and developing an understanding of emerging issues, trends, and best practices related to assigned projects by monitoring current research, legislation, policy, and other products.
Administrative and Other Responsibilities As Assigned :
Participating in project activities as needed, including meetings, site visits, conferences, and seminars.
Ensuring research project tasks and tasks are performed in a timely manner (according to timelines and deadlines) and with a high degree of quality.
Contribute to grant proposals and assist with grant management, including grant reporting, evaluation, timelines, and tracking deliverables.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work :
35 hours / week
Salary Range :
55,000-$65,000 / year.
The salary for this position will be generated through externally funded research activities.
Required Education and Experience :
Bachelor's degree.
Degree in economics, public policy, or a field related.
1-3 years of relevant experience.
Demonstrated experience in data analysis (including coding int Stata or R).
Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
Experience working with co-workers, partners, and supervisors.
Experience successfully running and completing components of projects.
Experience working with a high degree of attention to detail in a project-driven environment, successfully planning for and meeting deadlines with high-quality product.
Excellent listening and communication (verbal and written) skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Preferred Education and Experience :
Master's degree.
Coursework or work experience in econometrics, applied microeconomics, causal inference, and / or higher education policy is a plus.
