Summary:

The role of this position is to provide a safe, functional, clean, efficient and attractive living and learning environment. Building Maintenance Engineers perform work in a variety of trades in university facilities and is part of a zone maintenance team of trade persons responsible for a defined set of buildings on campus.  Responsibilities include work involving: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC and painting.  This position will be involved in corrective and preventive maintenance and minor alteration work and may oversee temporary labor and/or other trades persons or contractors as required.

Building Maintenance Engineers work independently and cooperatively with other Facility Management and University departments along with contract trade personnel in order to maintain building systems, prevent facility problems when possible and respond to customer requests or emergencies. They also occasionally function as a team leader of small project teams.

This position works under general supervision.

BMEs respond to work requests to troubleshoot problems with light plumbing, basic electrical/lighting, and carpentry.  The BME performs corrective and preventive maintenance tasks such as repairs to walls and doors; performs carpentry, painting and plastering work in order to prevent equipment interruption through proactive scheduled maintenance.

  • Responds to work requests to troubleshoot problems with light plumbing, basic electrical/lighting, and carpentry.  Performs corrective and preventive maintenance tasks such as repairs to walls and doors; performs carpentry, painting and plastering work in order to prevent equipment interruption through proactive scheduled maintenance. Repairs floors, ceilings, walls, doors, hardware, thresholds, door jams and other types of building components. Changes light bulbs and/or fluorescent tubes in a variety of types of lighting fixtures.  Makes general repairs to include broken glass, furniture, loose hand rails, ceiling tiles, stair treads, etc.  Occasionally supervises/checks the work of a contractor to ensure the work is complete and correct, and the area is left clean.

  • Installs white boards, pictures and mirrors and assists building occupants with the movement, realignment or assembly of furniture, temporary partitions or other stationary building components.  Hangs and maintains building signage including interior and exterior graphics; to ensure an attractive and comfortable living and learning environment.

  • Inspects and maintains all building rooms and equipment, in order to provide a safe and clean working condition for students and employees. Orders required parts and materials for minor and major repair work, to ensure necessary supplies are available, as needed. Assists other trades people, in order to perform and accomplish high quality work.

  • Maintains accurate files and equipment records for equipment repairs, in order to build a historical database from which to efficiently estimate future project costs.

  • Responds to emergency callbacks as needed.  Responds to emergency maintenance requests to include painting, plastering, wall repairs, etc.

  • Attends technical training to remain up to date with new equipment that may be installed in the building.

  • Maintains an inventory of tools and supplies sufficient to perform the above tasks.

  • Provides information and assistance to building occupants, planners and others involved in major alterations/renovations to the building.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Non-exempt, 40 hours.

Compensation:

  • $24.04-$33.00 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Technical Trade School Diploma or Certification.

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • 2-5 years of relevant experience.

  • 2-5 years’ experience with all trades (Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC and Carpentry).

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Universal CFC certification.

  • Basic troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to read blueprints.

  • Ability to work on ladders and scaffolding, and at heights of 40 feet or more, and lift 50lbs.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Ability to use basic hand tools for trade-related work.

  • Computer knowledge (MS Office).

  • Willingness to perform duties other than those typically associated with core trades responsibilities as the needs of the University dictate.

  • Ability to work as part of a diverse, team-oriented organization.

  • Ability to actively support team members and customers.

  • Ability to collaborate and cooperate with all employees.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance:

Must be authorized to work in the United States, and must pass a background check.
