This position is part of a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 500 - Provost & Enrollment Division. Job Description:

Summary/Objective:

The Part Time Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) provides comprehensive outpatient care to American University students within the scope of practice of a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant licensed in the District of Columbia. The APC assesses, interprets, and evaluates patient status, develops health care plans, and initiates patient communication and education as well as referral and urgent care.

The APC consults with the University Physician and collaborates with Center clinicians to ensure best practice clinical service delivery. The incumbent also provides guidance for nursing staff and ancillary employees.

Essential Functions:

  • Direct Patient Care: Provide primary health care services within scope of practice of the Student Health Center ensuring that care is appropriate to the age, culture, and individual needs of the patient consistent with the guidelines and standards established by the AAAHC accreditation body. Obtain health histories and perform physical exams. Diagnose and manage acute and chronic health conditions in partnership with the patient. Order, conduct, and interpret diagnostic studies and lab tests. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Prescribe and recommend pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, including controlled medications, in accordance with applicable laws. Follow standard charting procedures as determined by clinic policy; participate in chart and peer review. Ensure adequate follow-up. Teach and counsel patients, as indicated. Promote self-care through the provision of information, counseling, and education. Teach health promotion, wellness, and disease prevention.
  • Patient Communication: Communicate with patients via EMR/secure messaging or telephone regarding lab results, advice, follow-up instructions, and referrals. Provide precise information to enable the patient to make informed decisions regarding health care and related issues. Plan appropriate care utilizing campus and off-campus resources and relays information as necessary and appropriate for continuity of care. Promote positive patient relations and treat others with care and respect, maintaining confidentiality, privacy and dignity.
  • Consultation, Health Promotion and Professional Development: Serve as a resource and consultant to the campus community on issues related to public health, preventative medicine, and wellness. Participate in meetings, committees, and projects relevant to the functioning of the Center; participate in Campus Life events. Actively engage in professional development activities to include maintaining currency of licensure, certification, and continuing education. Participate in SHC Quality Assurance activities, provider meetings, case conferences and peer review.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part time.
  • 8-27 hours per week.
  • Participation in a rotational evening schedule involving one evening per week during the fall and spring semesters may be required.
  • Position may involve some telemedicine in addition to in-person visits. This position may either be a 10-, 11- or 12-month position.
  • FLSA: Non-exempt

Salary Range:

  • $57 - $58/hour (Commensurate with experience)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Licensed Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the District of Columbia.
  • Nurse Practitioner: Board certification by the AANP or ANCC as a family nurse practitioner, adult nurse practitioner, or women's health/adult practitioner.
  • Physician Assistant: Certification by the NCCPA.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Student service orientation with experience working with diverse population.
  • Experience in college health or with a college- age population.
  • Experience with an electronic medical record system.
  • Experience with quality improvement and peer review activities.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license and controlled substances number to prescribe controlled substances.
  • Proven ability to work as an effective member of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to manage multiple, competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency including personal productivity software and electronic medical record systems.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Professional practice style compatible with a multi-disciplinary team and supportive of the university’s mission.
  • Highest standards of integrity and ethics in both performance and behavior.
  • Desire and appreciation for work in a diverse, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to coach and mentor nurses and medical assistants is important.
