What are the responsibilities and job description for the Domestic Violence Advocate position at AmeriCorps Domestic Violence Advocacy Project?
Wayne State University Center for Urban Studies is seeking AmeriCorps members to fill Domestic Violence Advocate positions. The goal of the advocacy program is to reduce domestic violence crime by increasing the use of personal protection orders (PPOs). Advocates will work in neighborhoods with high rates of domestic violence and low resource availability. Each advocate will perform the following primary functions:
1) share information about rights, options, and the dynamics of domestic violence
2) develop safety plans
3) file petitions for PPOs and
4) increase access to community resources.
Advocates will also work to increase social support and community connections for victims. Advocates will connect with victims of domestic violence through the following avenues:
1) follow up phone calls after initial police contact
2) police referral while on scene
3) walk-in referrals at the precinct.
Training is provided before starting in the advocacy role. Applicants are encouraged to apply if they are looking for a way to give back to the community and provide information on how to assist survivors in advocating for themselves in promoting safety and wellness.
***The position is temporary and advocates can serve as little as 6 months to one full year. Some of our advocates are retired and want to give back to the community, some are students looking for job experience, and some are looking to do part-time service. You have flexibility to do that as an advocate with our program.***
