Ames CSD is seeking an Elementary Principal for Special Education for the 2025-2026 school year. 

Work Schedule: 255-day contract

Summary
The Associate Elementary Principal serves to assist the building principals and director of special education in providing leadership and supervision in administering the educational program of the building to promote students’ educational development and achievement following the Board's policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable law.  This position provides leadership in program development and improvement, as well as in professional staff development. The associate principal will serve as principal in the absence of the principal.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This position requires expertise in educational programs, curriculum, pedagogy, professional development, and culturally sustaining instructional strategies. This position also requires directly related administrative experience to ensure success in an elementary school leadership role. This administrative experience includes leading collaboratively, supporting and promoting diversity, fostering a student-centered approach leading to student engagement and success, and creating and maintaining an emotionally healthy and physically safe school culture. This position has supervisory responsibilities for planning, assigning, supporting, and evaluating the work of licensed and classified employees. It requires strong communication and relationship-building skills with both internal and external stakeholders.


Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Assists with general supervision for IDEA.
  • Assists in developing and implementing school special education programs consistent with District goals and objectives.
  • Provides leadership and direction to staff regarding the ongoing evaluation and improvement of special education programs.
  • Promotes a school environment that is safe and conducive to individualized instruction, cooperative curriculum development, and student learning.
  • Assists in ensuring that the school implements and follows Board policies and procedures.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings.
  • Encourages staff to continue to grow professionally and experiment with new teaching approaches or strategies.
  • Assists in coordinating school staff and district program leaders' work to develop and implement instructional programs and teaching practices for specially designed instruction.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and works with teaching staff to modify instructional methods to fit students' needs.
  • Assists in the recruitment and selection of employees, the proper maintenance of employee personnel files, the administration of collective bargaining agreements, corrective action, and other human resource issues.
  • Involves staff in the evaluation of programs and the planning of new programs.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct and attendance conform to school standards and district policies.
  • Supervises and evaluates teaching staff and other building employees following the school district's evaluation plan, and makes recommendations regarding goals, areas needing improvement, and continued employment.
  • Assists in the budgetary and financial affairs of the school, consistent with school district policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education, Superintendent, or other administrator designated by the Superintendent.
Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field and a valid Iowa Administrative License (or the ability to immediately obtain a license by the date of hire).
  • Extensive successful teaching experience, preferably in special education.
  • Successful experience as an administrator preferred.
The successful candidate will exhibit:
  • Knowledge of special education laws and high-leverage practices.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiating instruction based upon student needs.
  • Knowledge of the Elementary school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation, and staff supervision.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation about leadership, performance, and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted during work.
  • Create a sense of belonging and a welcoming environment for all students, families, and staff.
  • Attends work on a consistent and punctual basis.
