Ames Middle School is seeking a 6th Grade Language Arts Teacher for the 2025-2026 school year.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Structures a physical classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
- Establishes efficient classroom management procedures.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior.
- Teaches all required subject matters as assigned to the grade level.
- Establishes a system of student evaluation within guidelines prescribed by the District.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student’s needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Teaches within the course of student for their subject area objectives.
- Provides a variety of planned learning experiences using a variety of instructional techniques in order to motivate students and best utilize time for instruction.
- Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
- Is available for counseling with students and parents during preparation periods as well as before and after school.
- Participates in the development and revision of course outlines for classes taught. This shall include goals and performance objectives for students, course content and learning activities, evaluative procedures, and instructional materials.

Maintains a positive working relationship with building and District staff.
- Performs basic attendance, accounting and administrative tasks as required.
- Observes the designated work hours.
- Available for special assignments.
- Attends school and District meetings.
- Performs supervision as needed.
- Shares the responsibility of interpreting the educational program to the community through such activities as open house, back-to-school night, and PTA meetings.
- Seeks to improve competency by participating in personal and professional growth activities in conjunction with building and District goals.
- Participates cooperatively with the building Principal to develop a system by which they will be evaluated in conformance with the District’s guidelines for evaluations and assessment. Implements and supports District and school-wide programs to include Professional Learning Communities and RULER.
- Assumes the responsibility for written lesson plans and substitutes.
- Plans and coordinates the work of aides and other educational assistants and student teachers (when applicable).
Qualifications:
- Valid Iowa teaching license, K-6 Language Arts, 5-12 Language Arts, or Middle School Generalist Endorsement required.
- Demonstrated competency in the subject area(s) assigned.
- Effective problem-solving techniques in dealing with concerns or issues.
- Ability to work effectively as member of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Collaborative team player with a growth mindset.
- Observation of all District policies and procedures.
