What are the responsibilities and job description for the New BLS and ALS Openings (Amherst, VA) position at Amherst County Government?
Amherst County Public Safety (ACPS) is the career side of a combined Fire & EMS Department in beautiful Central Virginia. Career staff currently operate three medic units on a 24 hour on, 72 hour off schedule. A supervisor is assigned to each shift. Anticipating that the necessary funding will be approved in June, the department will begin operating a fourth medic unit on July 1. Recruitment is starting now for BLS and ALS positions to provide the additional staffing across the county.
Our dedicated EMT/FFs and Paramedic/FFs respond to over 5,000 calls to service each year. Calls originate from areas in both urban and rural settings, giving our providers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to develop their patient care skills transporting critical patients over long distances. We utilize Zoll monitors, a Hamilton T1 ventilator, POC Ultrasound, and IV pumps to provide the best care to our patients. Coupled with a progressive Medical Director and agency-specific protocols, Amherst County Public Safety is a premiere EMS organization in the Blue Ridge region.
We also partner with the Amherst County volunteer fire departments for training and call response. Our staff are cross-trained in firefighting operations and can assist where needed on the fireground. We hold quarterly department-wide training and alternate the topics each quarter between firefighting/rescue and EMS.
The starting salary for EMTs is $49,804, for AEMTs $52,295 and for Paramedics $58,833. Benefits include participation in the Virginia Retirement System, employer subsidized health insurance (medical, dental and vision), employer paid life insurance, tuition assistance and paid vacation and sick leave. In addition to paid overtime, approximately $2,500 to $3,000 in holiday pay is provided annually. This job is open until filled.
Qualified applicants will have a Virginia OEMS Certification, a Virginia approved EVOC and the ability to complete the FFI and HAZMAT certifications within 18 months of hire.
