PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Assistant Teacher assists the classroom teacher by performing assigned duties related to the learning process such as assembling and preparing instructional materials and monitoring students under the direction/supervision of the teacher or building administrator.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have:
- Completed at least 2 years of study (48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education; or
- Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
- Met a rigorous standard of quality as determined by a formal assessment. Mississippi uses ACT WorkKeys® assessment scores to measure this standard.
- Reading for Information Passing score = 4
- Applied Mathematics Passing score = 4
- Writing or Business Writing Passing score = 3
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Basic knowledge and/or experience related to area of assignment
- Skilled in handling varied multiple duties
- Demonstrates initiative and self-direction
- Sufficient strength, agility, and dexterity
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing to perform all performance responsibilities
- Willingness to serve all students
- Ability to work with students, teachers, administrators, and parents
- Ability to move about in room to monitor students and check work in classrooms with varied seating and desk organization patterns
- Ability to assist in the implementation of instructional program and to participate in monitoring and ensuring appropriate student behavior, including outdoor activity, gymnasiums, etc,…
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
REPORTS TO
School Administrator
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- May substitute for the classroom teacher for short periods of time, if under the direction and guidance of plans provided by the teacher
- Performs clerical work related to instructional activities such as grading assignments, monitoring attendance, keeping lunch counts, collecting fees, maintaining files of student work, and the like
- Performs assigned duties related to the learning process
- Monitors students under the direction/supervision of the teacher or building administrator
- Assists with bus, cafeteria, or hall duty
- Assists the teacher in assembling and preparing instructional materials
- Assists the teacher in the maintenance of a safe, clean, and attractive classroom
- Participates in staff development activities related to area of assignment
- Performs other duties as assigned
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
187 days salary according to School Board Pay Schedule
EVALUATION
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of non-licensed personnel.
